Thumbs down Make blood look realistic from brushes on photoshop

Below is an easy way to make a blood brush look realistic using Photoshop. It's perfect for dark art, and such.

First and foremost, use the original black and white, and the brush at full opacity for your blood. You can change the opacity at the END if you choose to make it partially see-through. Try to only use brushes with a lot of detail (shadows and highlights) to achieve a real look. Stay far, far away from flat, toneless blood brushes if you want them to look even slightly real.

Once you've made a new layer (shift + cntrl + N) in your artwork, resize and use the brush. (Make sure there is a white background on ANOTHER layer so that the tones and colours will look proper).

It should look like this:

Next, with the layer with the blood on it selected, go to 'color balance' (ctrl + B). Put the values to:

This will make your blood look something like this:

To add dimension to your blood, go to 'curves' (ctrl + M), and manipulate the curve to look something like this, but use your own discretion:

When/if more colour is added later, the darkness may go away, but if it's near black, ease back on the curve. This is how the 'blood' should look:

If the image is too dark, as above, go to the 'color balance' again (ctrl + B). Adjust the values to suit what you want the blood to look like. The colour should look slightly better. If you're happy with the blood, it is ready to be used.

However, if you're looking to make further impact, you can also burn and dodge the edges to add some drama.

The 'burn' tool will allow you to make the edges darker, while the 'dodge' tool will allow you to make the edges lighter. Be sure to take into account the direction of the lighting.

THANK YOU TO Shad0w-GFX ON DEVIANTART (Shad0w-GFX on deviantART) FOR THE BRUSH USED FOR THE BLOOD. If you find any of the steps here confusing at all, take a look at his version. Also, the brushes he has are very high quality, and I suggest taking a good look at them.

Hope this helped you out! If you need any help at all, feel free to message me!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a re-wording of the deviantART tutorial that accompanies those brushes?

No one's "getting bitchy" or "trying to undermne someone else" - I am fulfilling my role as a moderator. If you care to read the Tutorial Submission Guidelines, you'll see the following:
The Tutorial Submission Forum serves as a place for you to share your knowledge, impress others and, of course, earn valuable reputation bonuses. You can also submit your tutorials here if you want them to be considered for addition to the BioRUST main pages. If you are after this goal, however, you should bear in mind the following points:
  • First and foremost, we will only publish tutorials which you own, and which feature techniques or effects not already featured in other tutorials on BioRUST. We go to great lengths to ensure that the content you submit is original and not ripped from elsewhere, so please be honest!

I think that more people should read those guidelines/ rules down here especialy the newer members, Because this ain't youre first "link" to a rule/ guideline, is it tamlin!!

For the rest, it's a good tut i think. Really helpfull, just a shame it can't be placed on biorust because you "rewrote" someone elses tuturial...

Quite right. Maybe we should just have a simple list of DOs and DONTs for people who can't be bothered to read the Forum Guidelines?

Tamlin/Moog/Any Other Moderator

Would it make sense to have a suggested tutorial section for this type of thing? Similar to the way you have the web index, you could launch a new browser window with the ability to rate the tutorial.

There's a ton of information out there, and with so many of us, it seems like it would be a very helpful way of promoting something that could help grow people as designers. It would also solve the issue of posting potential copyrighted material since you would be linking directly to the tutorial location on the webspace.

Just a thought...

Umm...you mean like a Links page where people could post links to other tutorials? I guess it's possible, but that's something that the Site Admin (i.e. M0g) would have to sort out, unless we just had a sticky thread somewhere.

It doesn't look that realistic to me and I didn't find it helpful at all. I would have liked it if you applied it to something rather than just a white background.
