Thumbs up TUT - Photoshop: Sky Writing

Here's a tutorial that, although done for a bit of fun, does demonstrate some useful techniques that new PS users may not be familiar with:

Hope you like it!

I think the effect is at it's best without the text layer and just the shadow layer visible. Or then change the text also to go with the clouds (overlay/screen ?) Nice tut anyways.

Well...you learn something new every day! In all the time I have been using photoshop I have never once used the displacement map filter. This tutorial has made my day. I have just been playing around with it and it works a treat with just about anything. Not sure how often I will need to use it but that's besides the point...I know how to do it now and that's what counts! Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks wasn't exactly correct. Today I learnt something new...bang on. Yeah!

Cheers gingerbloke. I've been using Photoshop since version 6 and I'm still discovering new tricks (and I'm a very old dog...)

Another good use for displacement maps is if you want to make text or an image look like it's been painted or carved onto a rough surface like a brick wall or a cliff face.

Great effect, Tamlin. You should think about submitting something similar to BioRUST's tutorials section - it'll earn you some reputation and a bunch of BioCredits.

Another good use of the Displacement feature: applying an image to a flag (or other fabric-like image).

Yeah that's some pretty sweet effects you have there! I agree in that it seems like that or something similar could be used to make inlaid patterns on almost anything. Quite useful, really. This should get into the official tutorials, definitely!
