another great way to do this rather than constantly hitting control or command D is to select the object you want to replicate... then use the transform effect. You can make as many copies as you need in lot less time with more control over rotation, alignment, scale and more.... you make spirograph look or use it to make really nice abstract pieces
I often use this to create edgy tech like designs with stacked shapes that zoom and offset just a little
