The source image is very very important... as is a careful and detailed selection around the eye. The 'lightning-look' around the eye was present in my original image.... although I can't imagine it would be too hard to add it in as a separate layer.
PS. Your image looks good, but the edges around the iris are too hard. Try using a softer brush when using the quick mask around the edges - it will make for a much cleaner effect.

I tried this out and it worked alright (my eye didn't have as much detail as yours), but then I tried again today and I seem to have changed some settings on my brush so it creates a fuzzy selection rather than a sharp one. See attachment for details.
Any ideas what I've done, so far as I can tell I didn't change any settings to the brush itself.

Ahhhh! Well, if you take a look at the quick mask you will notice that the overflowing area is a slightly different shade of red. This indicates that your selection was perhaps a tad TOO fuzzy, as the quick mask is essentially an alpha-transparency mask of the area. Try increasing the opacity of your brush to 100% and starting again from scratch.

LOL! Yup, I *DID* mean Overlay! Many thanks for the head-up - I've now corrected the mistake in the tutorial.

thanks for quick responce. I tried that and my eyes turned green, even though i picked blue as the color. They also dont look like eyes, it looks like two cut out circles.
What i'm doing wrong

Occasionally a bit of color blending happens, which may alter your color. Try desaturating (i.e. making greyscale) the area under your eye color layer - this wll solve that problem. As for the circles - you need to use a soft brush when quickmasking and ensure that you blend in the edges to the contour of the eye underneath. If you use a hard-edged brush and/or rush it, it'll look totally artificial.
