Hey all. I came here through a link to this tutorial from Pixel2Life and thought I'd sign up to answer this question a few of you have. This does seem like a nice place to visit, so I'm sure I'll be back.
Anyway...due to video acceleration - in which Windows simply puts a black box on the screen and allows the video card to overlay the image onto it, instead of diectly on the desktop - when you try to take a screenshot, in most cases, all you end up with is the black box.
There are a few ways to get around this. One is to get Media Player Classic, which is free and a very nice little app., which has a Save Image As.. function and a frame-step button, making this process pretty easy. (Not sure if it's okay to link to other pages from within this forum, but it should be easy enough to find).
Another way is to turn off video acceleration. In Windows Media Player, this can be found under Tools > Options > Performance - move the slider all the way to the left. You can't view it full-screen but you can take a screenshot. As for other players, one's which I may not be familiar with, you'll have to search for yourself to find out how to turn off acceleration.
Hope that was helpful.
