I am trying out this tutorial but for some reason I can't add lighting effects to the first layer and I definitely have it selected. I am making my own rock texture in a different colour would that be the problem ?

After working on the new Channel (Alpha 1) in Step 2, you need to select the RGB Channel (at the top of the Channels palette) before you switch back to Layers in Step 3.

Ah I see it now I had my mode set in CMYK instead of RGB, and so it wouldn't give me lighting options .
