Good instruction on the burn and dodge tools. The 1px low exposure 'scratching' is a useful tool to have.

Good effect, and very natural.

This is a nicely described simple and effective effect. THanks.

Best looking metal

This is the best looking metal tutorial I have seen, the scratches and use make it look awesome. Thanks.

Angry Ah, to be penniless

I tried this in three different freeware programs. GIMP can't do the clouds, Paint.NET lacks a sponge filter, and Inkscape doesn't even HAVE foreground/background coloring ability. And I can't afford Photoshop. Suggestions, anyone?

Great looking texture, by the way.

GIMP version 2.4 has Filters > Render > Clouds > Fog which gets you part of the way to Step 3 in the tutorial. Then it's a case of using the Dodge and Burn tools to refine the "Sponge" effect.

Well, this probably explains something. I'm using GIMPShop at the moment, which apprently doesn't have that function. Outdated, I guess...I'll re-install good old fashioned GIMP and see if the situation changes. Thanks!

Never mind. It still doesn't work. Every time I try to make clouds in GIMP I get black and white ones, even though I changed the colors. Can anyone help me out here?

I would suggest trying out all of the Cloud options here. Try using Plasma if you would like color. I don't even have the Fog option in my GiMP install.

Hope this helps.
