I suspect I may be wrong in placing this thread here, and not in some other category, but this seemed to be the right place.
Thing is, I have my closing exams in just over a week from today. I will then stand upright for half an hour, presenting various works in the categories sound (some radio\sound-mixing stuff I did), text (not sure, maybe a script) and image (this can be anything from moving pictures to paintings. I'll talk about a logo I did) on projector. As a communicative medium, I choose to work web-oriented, that is, building my portfolio as a website.
Now, as I will work locally, size matters not. However, I will not work with Flash (simply because I can't). But I have been twisting my mind for weeks trying to find out just how to theme the damn thing, and not so long ago, it came to me:
An idea! But I think it sucks. Anyhow, this is how I suspect I want my navigation to look. At least, something similar to this. To the right, there ought to be something that can represent text (not a "T", and pens don't look good - I tried...)
In that ellipse I'll add the name of subcategory currently active, I'll use animating .gif's to fade in and out a blue glow around the symbols as mouseover... but I don't know if it'll be any good at all.
Basically, this is a cry for help

And god knows I need it. Is this even a good starting point? I was thinking putting this navthing in the top middle area, having a dark grey or light grey textured bg down as text bg. Also, I want to add some screws or something around the edge of this menu. But any ideas at all are gold to me.
