Thanks tamlin, I do seem to find myself publishing a small novel with every post I make, so it's good to hear that I at least post up something interesting from time to time

oOOoo a tutorial you say?

hmm, not sure how I'd create it into a tutorial, but maybe I'll put something together when I'm all done, from creative design process, to modeling processes, uv unwrapping, texturing (photoshop stuff too) lighting theories and processes, and renderings to final compositing and exporting in a post production program like apples shake or adobes' after effects...

althought i'll be somewhat new to the last couple sections myself. If there is enough interest I might just do that

Unleash: I might reserve the robot idea til the very end. I think it will completely change the whole feel of the scene which will be really interesting to see. Not sure what kind of robot, but I think it will be cool. ...remind me when i'm all done to try a version with a robot in it

lol yeah I've been waiting to see it textured for over a month now :P

I think I will be able to start texturing shortly, just a few more detail models to create and I'll be ready to texture (kinda nervous about texturing it's been over a year since I have)

Ummm, which portfolio are you talking about? Most of my old 3d portfolio is just that ...really old. Which is why I am redoing it. I have a few things from about 5-6 yrs ago, but anything more recent, I don't really have because my HD's crashed and I lost everything .

So here's some advice to all of you and take it serious. If you care anything about the work you are doing. Back it up, ...back it up daily, weekly, monthly whatever...but keep it backed up, I lost about 10 months of work because I didn't.

If you'd like to see some of my old work, I'll post it up *runs and hides

lol yeah that would be kinda funny to do a robot version of a disney classic /sigh

*daydreams...probably won't have time, I was thinking about doing a little flying orb with a telescopic eyeball on it...looking in windows or somethin...

Anyways unleash you seem to be kinda of interested in composition and what not lately, so here are a couple of links to look at. I know they might be long and full of *gasp! reading...
so here are a list of references I used when researching composition, but remember there is no set rules, only guidelines to help you get started, the rest is up to you (wow i feel like we should bow and feel honor now or somethin')

Thanks for posting these. You could search for hours nowadays for really useful information and every little bit helps. I consider myself new enough to all of this NOT to know what I'm doing and really appreciate the pointers to good information.

Your model is great. I don't know that I'll ever get into 3D modeling being as long in the tooth as I am, but I'm currently trying to get up to speed on a new DSLR and Photoshop. Maybe someday I can do some 2D that's pretty good.

Hey no problem, I'm glad I can point people in the direction to smarter people

Well I've been pretty busy trying to put up my web/graphic portfolio. It's getting close to being completed so I haven't really had a chance to work on my 3d scene. that and i'm dreading texturing about 3000 objects o.0

anyways here's an updated image of my scene, all i have left really is detailing the wall on the building on the right. with wallstones like the ones i used on the bakery. and adding flowers to the flowerboxes, smoke for the chimney, and water and dirt, smaller details like the flies and bee, some grass, moss and weeds that will grow along the walls, or between the stones ...

So I am curious as to how many of you would like to see a "work process" type tutorial.

Basically it's a blog style tutorial, that shows how I am doing things, problems that arise and how i get around them or decide to use an alternative method, this would include: modeling, texturing, uv layouts, lighting, rendering, compositing, and animating. but using my project as a base. if there's enough interest then I will start logging my process with screenshots and notes... I guess i could call it a plog (production log) tee hee hee, i said LOG

anyways, here's an
updated render

because it's repeatable I just created 1 little section...i started off with a poly plane, and from there, i selected some edges and used bevel plus in maya...

once i had the bevel and depth i wanted, I just duplicated the faces, under the poly tools (in the modeling section of maya) until i got the shape I wanted...

i am really not happy with how they turned out, In the end I believe I will just use a texture and do smaller crosshatching, and make them look like lead, these ones look like a wooden lattice, something I don't want to do,

I THINK they used lead and metal to put the window panes together...

anyways I hope this is clear enough for you, if not, feel free to ask more questions

Hmm, i think you should keep them this way.
If you look at drawings of old buildings the old houses and stores and things have wood lattice(it was cheaper, way cheaper) and the castels and churches did have metal bars(because they did had the money). So if you keep them like this they are more realistic!!

And I like them as they are But it is your artwork offcourse, you decision
