I don't know how many times I've seen someone take the fish symbol and slap a few words on it then call them selfs "Christians". there's nothing wrong with it I just feel it's been done so many times. As far as everything else, it looks great. I like the effects used on the text and when I first saw it I thought of basketball. Something about text lol.

well the fish is a Christian symbol I figured for the kind of thing this is that a genric symbol would be best, perhaps you disagree? I believe there is certainly depth in originality, I just figured that more Christians will recognize the fish as a symbol of Christianity, as YLC is a Youth Leadership Program, I went through it once and it brought be closer to God, but I'm not here to talk about my religion . So do you think the generic works, or are you looking for something more original? perhaps I could alter the fish a bit?

Honestly, I would revisit the whole concept. While the fish is a recognizable symbol it doesn't mean it should be what drives the whole concept.
How many computer companies use a computer as part of their logo? They may hint at the idea or concept, but 99 times out of a 100 they will go for the less litteral approach.
Just my two cents. If you want to use this concept, then I would revisith the text. The YLC is a bit too rigid and the "training" text looks like an afterthought.

First and foremost, get rid of those quote marks around your strapline - they're not necessary unless you are attributing a quote to someone, and they make the whole thing look far too twee.
If you really must use the fish symbol, you need to make it interact better with your YLC text. At the moment there is no cohesion between the two, and the C of YLC is actually clashing with the fish's tail shape. Most of these fish-based logos that I have seen have the text entirely enclosed within the outline of the fish.

yea I think that looks ugly . since no one seems to like the generic approach I will see what my creativity can conjure up.

The symbol, as already mentioned, has been used soooo much. However...I like the idea and think there's some potential to work with. I wouldn't use the traditional symbol, but use it as a basis of ideas. An example being, a cartoon fish or a vector mascot following the symbol structure might work well, due to it being aimed at young people. It would give them something to relate to in terms of religion and symbolic identity, which the majority of youth groups focus themselves around.
The type is nice, it's very strong, I like it. So many options you could use with type like that.
I'm not too sure on the second idea though. To me it screams out Y-M-C-A and might confuse people in what kind of 'group' it actually is.

The 2nd one feels empty. Also, what is a L looks like an i with the head above it. I don't disagree with you that the symbol is generic, but how it was used is generic. An idea that came to mind: What about one big fish with a cane and a bunch of little fish behind him following, hence leadership. Though I don't think that be would considered a logo.

Pscoke I like your idea, but I do think it is too complex , but I will play around with the fish some more since the person idea flopped. I have a few ideas, one of which I cant do because I only have photoshop 6.0, but I still have some ideas I can do. We'll see about it tomorrow.
By the way, the whole idea with the L was that in lowercase the L is much more "balanced" to the Y and C, if I make it uppercase there is too much L on the right side, and it looks awkward.

The main problem you will find with the font you're using is that when you view the logo in a 'logo size', it is hard to read.

I like the idea of the 2nd concept. I think you should abandon the pen'd type though. The balance shouldn't be thrown off with the "L" instead of the "l" if you have the letters closer together.
The type you choose needs to be bold and stand out, but should really stand out on its own as well. There's nothing wrong with using a more plain font and jazing the logo up with your design.
Consider starting with black & white (greyscale) before adding the color. When you take your existing design and convert it, it loses a lot of appeal and the type gets a little lost in the overall design.

If you want to go back to the fish concept but make it subtle, the C kind of looks like the fish's head. Maybe add a subtle tail to it?

Yes, but with the people I couldn't have them close together because of the spacing. As you can see, the letters are close together in the first design, so its an "L" but in the second one its much harder to keep them closer together while making the design work, hence the "l"

I made the text to be bold and stand out so I'm a little lost as to why it isn't
