super concept render experiment, lol
Well i think i have just about fully mastered blender now (great app!). Here is my first actual peice of work that i ahev made. It is a retro looking mp3 player. It was renderd using yafray. It uses a gi shader and a basic hdri map. The screen is lit up by a 2d plane.
It took about 5 hours to model (sh*t loads of detail). This is probably my most well done render (not best model though). It was also lit by 4 spot lights,
Well just critique on it. I know alot of people will not like the design because its pretty retro.

Looks good, not mind blowing, but good. The chip looks way too flat though,

It's pretty nice looking with the detail, but the black material on the mp3 just doesn't look right. Maybe a shinier, plastic material would work better. I agree with Evdawg about the chip, I can't really tell if it is lying on the same plane as the mp3 or just floating in the air.
Not really sure just something about it that doesn't look right.

Why not model something existing, say the iPod or similiar mp3 players?

Well order, i like concept design. I like designing non existing products sicne it gives a greater sense of achievement.
I have just spent the last three hours filling in some errors. I am still not very happy with it. I shall be redoing alot more,
in the last three hours i redid the memory card and redid the case body. It should now look alot nicer apart from teh gi shader isn't present any more, that shall be in the final render

Looks much better than the first version. I like the position of the card now. Can't wait for the full version with materials.

Hey, I just realized - it looks a bit like the Medion MP3 player! Now, of you can just replicate its lovely chrome and orange colours, you'd be really cookin'!

thats a bad ass mp3 player m0g. Well here is a preview of the materials. the rendering times are ridiculous, it took about 30 mins to do this really grainy preview.
There is way to much grain because the global illumination shader is of a real low quality at the moment. I will definatly finish this project by thursday because that is when i go to school.
The textures at the moment are just test textures, they will be reworked, bump mapping and small bump map details shall also be added, but it is probably more detailed than my guitar right now, it even has a battery compartment.

Even nicer, only one thing that looks a little off. You can see the indentation on the first three buttons on the player, but the fourth one looks as if it isn't inset.

the indents in the buttons are all the same it is just the low quality render and the camera angle. I just spent 4 hours rendering the thing just now. I have now given up on it.
