yep... I see it on a regular basis. I work in advertising and regularly get photos printed out on inkjet printers using regular paper and all. Sometimes they will even give us a business card to get their picture or logo... only they want to use it 3x times the size or bigger in print.
I have also gotten drivers licenses for photos, 20 year old polaroids, horrible xerox copies, faxes, and tiny web art at 72 dpi.
I always remind people that give me crappy art/photos to work with... "don't expect a miracle because I am not a magician nor holy worker"

I would imagine the usual client's response goes something like:
"Yeah, but you've got Photoshop: you can take the smallest, crappiest, noisiest, low-res cell phone photograph, put it into PS and sharpen it up and zoom right into it to reveal the smallest detail. I've seen it in films and on CSI, so it must be true!"
Thankfully, the only images I have to edit are my own.

I have enough challenges, LOL! I totally understand what you're saying. Part of my job duties are taking photos internally of our employees for recognition purposes (newsletter, announcements, etc.) and sometimes they submit their own worst photos-- that is when they don't let me take one. I make more enemies than friends when I'm walking around with my camera.
And, if I do take their photo, you're right Tamlin, I get the "you have Photoshop, can you take out my wrinkles and make me lose some weight?"
The best is when they think the turnaround time for completing an advertisement (for internal purposes) is right away. Yes, send me the info and I'll open it in Photoshop and voila! it's done.

lol... we used to get that kinda response but most of our sales reps and advertisers are now aware that "we simply don't have the time to beautify every image they give us" and so its not as bad as it has been in the past.
Realtors are the most vain clients it seems though. They want a new picture added whenever they change their hair style or whenever they change their appearance and they often complain the way their photos look. Funny thing is... some have had their photos edited by probably a family member and the image comes to us looking nothing like something someone tried to paint using MS Paint or something. Not natural looking at all and looks horrible when reproduced lol.
The last bad project I got was a realtor who gave me a series of photos dating back to the 70's showing the progression of his look over the years. Half of the images were actually physically cut around hair (with scissors most likely), head and shoulders to get a clipping path look no doubt. Several of the older images were just horrible for color and and contrast. I still find it funny the Realtors think people select them by the look of the photos in their ads... when in reality its just they want to look good for the other Realtors

yeah... we have had that kinda thing here too... some of our staff are as bad as the realtors complaining about bad photos and wanting something that looks "professional" when taken with only a point and shoot camera by a non-photo person.
this is why I don't take many photos of "people"... its hard to satisfy most... I prefer animals... they don't complain... though they don't listen well for posing either

You are so right! A lot of realtor photos I've seen have their dogs pictured with them. It's usually one of those dogs you can carry in your bag with you and they look so proud to be holding the pooch up to their cheek in the photo. I'm sorry, but that will not make me choose that realtor -- my personal opinion of course.
You're right about the animals too; I'll call my dog's name and he'll come over and want to lick the camera instead of just turning his head in my direction.
This is why I love Biorust... so many others can relate!

Actually, I do pretty well with dogs. Just show them a piece of popcorn and hold it next to your lens - they give the best expressions. Anyway, I get the low-res photos occasionally, especially for doing websites and keynotes. I made the coolest logo for Caked Alaska, and now it looks like trash, since I had to make it a really tiny gif. Can anyone say "redo"?
The worst have to be in a client's powerpoints. They came to me with a bunch of tiny jpegs, horrendous "Jetsons" style clipart, and clipped images with ragged edges out the wazoo. Finally managed to dump some of those...
Thankfully, that's about the full story.

on a similar note: I am the cad guy for the place i work at. I have been asked to cad up physically impossible objects before.
" I want a 24 inch wide arch that spans a 48 inch wide opening."
and how many of us have heard " that's not my problem, make it work"
(like photoshop has Filter > colorize > faxed xerox copy )

I could stretch it and then send to Photoshop Disasters website to see if I make the list
Is that option a script? If so... can you please send it to me?
