Smile Resizing photos and graphics

Hi Everybody!

I am not only new to this forum, I am fairly new to the graphics world. I have been playing around, teaching myself for about a year. I just finally got a computer that has some power and doesn't die on me. At the moment I can't afford Photo Shop, so I am using Paint Shop Pro 12. I was told that I could learn from Photo Shop Tutorials and transfer the knowledge. I am having trouble making photos or any graphic files larger without having either distortion or corruption. I am doing some stuff for a friend's web site and I am archiving family photos. Any suggestion?

Hi and welcome to BioRust. I haven't used Paint Shop Pro never so I can't really say anything about that but if you are trying to make images larger than they originally are, you are going to experience quality loss. There are special applications that are designed to minimize the quality loss but I don't have any experience with them. Maybe someone else can give you some recommendations.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply Telos and nice to meet you. Someone will have an answer. You have given me a clue saying there are special programs for that. I have lost hours after resizing, fixing the photos and graphics. I have cleaned them up pixel by pixel. I know there must be a better way of handling them.

As Telos quite rightly says, enlarging digital images with little or no loss of quality is difficult. This is because a digital image only has so much data held within it, so whatever image-processing software you are using to enlarge the image has to supply data to "fill in" the inevitable gaps that result. I have not used PSP for many years, so I don't know how good its image-enlarging algorithms are, but I would recommend you use "Resample" rather than "Resize" if you're doing it within the application.
There are a number of 3rd-party plugins and stand-alone applications that claim to be able to resize images with little loss of quality. I have tried a few of these - one of the best is Alien Skin's Blow Up, but unfortunately I think that's only available as a Photoshop plugin. Another good one is PhotoZoom Pro, which is available as both a Photoshop plugin and a standalone application. It's effective, but unfortunately not cheap.
Apparently the industry standard is Genuine Fractals Print Pro, although I haven't tried this (and it's also very expensive at $299.99 for the full app).
There are, however, some free applications (such as PicuSizer) - although again I have no experience of how good (or otherwise) they are.
You can find links to lots of image-resizing applications here:

I've also read good reviews of Genuine Fractals. There's a free trial which you can try first if you really need one. If it is really good, then maybe the $300 is not too much. Try also the others since there may be only a slight difference. Since the more highend you go in anything the more expensive the small steps become.

Sophiapax3: Here is some very in-depth information about image resizing that you might find useful:
