I think you'd be very lucky to make enough money to buy a decent DSLR by selling prints online. If you can't get any stock photo sites to take your work, you're pretty much left with the options of selling it somewhere like eBay, or setting up your own site.
If you do a search on eBay for original photographic prints, you'll find most are selling for a measly few pounds/dollars each. The only substantially-priced one I could find was a print by Bob Carlos Clarke which is currently standing at £500, but that's because he's a famous and long-established photographer.
If you set your own site up, you've got to consider the administrative costs of that, plus things like dealing with payments and postage and packing. Also, how are you going to go about getting your prints made? If you're doing them yourself, you'll need to consider the cost of a decent large-scale printer, archival paper and proper photographic pigment inks - your customers aren't going to be happy if they buy one of your prints, only to have the colours fade after a year or so. If you're going to get them professionally printed, there's the print bureau's costs to consider.
