Retouching and Sharpening Help

Is there anyone with CS2 or skills in photo correction that could give me a hand? I took a shot of my daughter, but lighting and camera shift killed what would have been a great shot to print. I can correct color, but sharpening a blurred image really isn't a skill I have. Any help would be appreciated...

If you have any tips on doing this type of thing, I'm happy to try it myself. It would certainly be a good skill to have.

You can find the full version of the photo here:

The two Photoshop tools I always turn to are Smart Sharpen (CS2 only) and Unsharp Mask (all versions). There's also the option of manual sharpening with the Sharpen tool. If it's a more complicated job, there's a technique for sharpening with a mask which is a bit in-depth to go into here. On top of that, I have a couple of third-party plugins for sharpening (although I don't usually need to resort to them).

I've downloaded a copy of your image and I'll give it a go anyway. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

EDIT: (Some time later...)
I've had a go, although I'm not really happy with the results. I tried just using Smart Sharpen and USM, but there was too much noise in the photo that got sharpened too. I ended up using a Hard Light blending mode/High Pass filter technique and then added a layer mask to lessen the effect on the areas where the noise was obtrusive. This is the JPG:

(be warned - it's a biggy. Nearly 3mb, because I didn't want to introduce any more artefacts than I had to). I also have a ZIP file of the PSD I created if you want it (although that's even bigger - nearly 22mb).

Since I had a go at sharpening this image, I have purchased a plugin called FocalBlade which an absolutely excellent tool for jobs like this. It has several different modes from Novice to Expert and literally dozens of independently customizable settings that allow you to get just the sharpening you need in just the areas that need it. It's compatible with both Windows and Mac, and at only $49.95 it won't break the bank either.

I just realised I'm starting to sound like a salesman so I'll shut up now. Check it out here:

That site is very nice (only information about plugins and they have a forum)and a monthly newsletter (free).
Yes, focal blade is excellent. If possible have also a look at lightmachine and colorwasher.

Wow I actually never saw the pass you made at this, thanks for following up again. I'll have to take a look into that program too (do you have an affiliate link so you get paid if I buy it... )

The adjustments you made definitely were a big improvement. It's tough with so much of the photo blurred and so much grain to the photo as well. That's my biggest knock against our new point and shoot digital camera... the lighting in our house seems to be in the range where it really has trouble taking clear pictures in certain rooms. Oh well, it works for what we need it for and as soon as I have enough money stashed away for an SLR digital, I'll use that mostly anyway.

hey stiney here's my attempt at it...I masked out your daughter from the background and made some adjustments to each...seeing that she is our focal point I masked her out and did the smart sharpen on her...you can go even further and only sharpen different features of her that you want cleaned up.

if you would like to see how i setup the photoshop file just ask...everything is completely reverseable and can be readjusted...I exported a smaller image for now...
the photoshop file is 65mb so if you want that, i can zip it and put it on my ftp for ya.

Nice job agentxi... the layers setup really helps. I'd love a copy of the PSD file, but my guess is it wouldn't be compatible with CS1 would it?

I could always download a demo to look at it though, so if you were able to post it somewhere, that would be very helpful!

Actually Tamlin, the same could be said about your's. I think I'd be shooting for something in the middle of the two (probably softer in the face area, but keeping the sharpness in the clothing).

I haven't reallly used any tools that cs1 doesn't have...or at least i don't think i did...so it should work...

i am currently uploading the file to my ftp

it's a rar file so you need winrar to uncompress it...

and it's a tiny size of 45mb o.0

i'll post my link once it's done uploading...

Hi stiney:
Here's a link to the ZIP containing my PSD. I also didn't use any techniques that aren't compatible with CS, so you shouldn't have any problems.
