Exclamation Camera help What is a good camera

Okay so I have decided to buy a good camera for my self. I have always been quite interested in photgraphy to tell you the truth. I wanted to know if there was a good camera out there for me to use. One I had my eye on is about 800 us dollars so I will be saving. Well I have to since I am grounded from buying anything. but any sites out there that say abit about cameras. Plus since I have no scanner I will be shooting the images and putting them into my computer. My drawings that is.

I have a few friends with the Cannon Digital Rebel XT. It may be worth taking a look at a camera like that when it's coming down in price (you can find the base model for under $600 USD on Amazon) and spending the extra money on additional lenses and filters.

To give you an idea of what you can do with this camera check out this website (this guy is a friend of mine's college buddy from DC) many of his pictures were taken with the Rebel XT:

In your price range Darkie, I'd recommend (highly) the Sony Alpha 100.

It is Sony's first DSLR but it is based on some very impressive technologies... Minolta entered the DSLR market about 2 years ago with the Konica Minolta 7D. It is a superb camera based on the hugely popular Maxxum 7 platform. The screen is large, the performance outstanding, and it has lens independant anti-shake built in. It is very effective for shooting without a tri-pod!

I had little choice when I went digital because all of my equipment (tens of thousands of dollars in lenses) were 100% compatible.

Sony purchased the Camera side of Konica Minolta (after the 5d was released - a scaled down version of the 7d with some more in-camera effects).

Sony has mixed their magic with the existing technologies to introduce the Alpha 100 - they've kept the anti-shake, improved the menus and a few other features and the image quality (MP) for around 8 or 9 hundred US.

It's my recommendation based on current offerings.

The canon D20 or D30 are both exceptional, but a bit more money.... you may have to settle for a Digital Rebel in your price range.

Nikon has some supreme cameras, but where their quality shines is in the upper end... if you go Nikon, go BIG

Of course, DSLR is not the only way to go... just the preference of professionals. The Canon A series are exceptional for feature and performance... in my opinion, they are the best bet for a compact full-featured camera. They had a G series which has a larger lens for better overall photo quality (less fringeing) but I think they've dropped them for the EOS 300D/350D (Rebels).

Sony compacts are good too, especially if you can get one with a Carl Zeiss lens... But they are more money than any other brand (for similar features) and the memory is a bit more expensive.

Well, that's alot of info I know... but if you're considering a specific camera, let me know and I can tell you what I know about it.

I've avoided Kodak and HP cameras and any Plastic Fuji's... but the Casio exislim's are real nice for the price and very compact.

I could go on and on... but I won't.

Hope i've helped, and not made it worse.

Mike.

All the photos I've posted here were taken with a Canon EOS 350D (the Digital Rebel as it's known in the US). It's an excellent piece of kit, and the new version (the 400D) is apparently even better (shoots at 10 megapixels as opposed to 8).

Sounds like the Canon Rebel (300/350/400) is the one for you Darkie!

Good Luck!

Mike.

Have a look at eBay. That's where I got mine from. I got the 2-lens package (camera body, 18-55mm zoom and 75-300mm zoom) for a lot less than the RRP. Just make sure you use a reputable seller.
