try cleaning the lens with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol...
even if you don't think it's dirty, it could be. If it's a point and shoot, it might not be TTL so what you see through the viewfinder is different than what the lens sees...
Try using a mini-tripod or increasing the light on your subjects.
Also, when you press the button to focus, point the centre of the viewfinder at the darkest object in the scene... and while you still have the button down half way, move the viewfinder to where you want it and press all the way to take a picture.
This will improve the metering and ultimately the amount of exposure compensation that is used.
