Looking for slide scanner preferences

Hi, After loosing my last flatbed scanner in a thunderstorm I am looking for a new one and wondered if anyone here has any preferences for a scanner in the $300 to $500 dollar range. I have lots of slides to scan. My last scanner was an hpscanjet 3970. It was ok but I would like to get better quality scans. Any suggestions would be appreiciated. Nanc

well better quality scans you can obtain by scanning good photos or whatever the thing is not to have smudges or etc 'cause the scanner doesn't remove that. and also try scanning them at a higher resolution and then messing with the scans in...(you guessed it!) photoshop. nevertheless search for a scanner that has a high scaning resolution (dpi) and that supports many many colors. for example i use a Canon CanoScan 8400F Flatbed Scanner that has max 3200 dpi with 48 bit colors. you can see full specifications for this one here

Nancy:
The Epson 4990 seems to be a good choice. It's quite cheap ($268.88 at Amazon - Amazon.com: Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner: Electronics ). There's an in-depth review of it here: Epson 4990

I don't have a slide scanner myself, but I have two Epson printers and they are very good quality.

Thanks

Thanks, I'm comparing the scanners, though with the mixed reviews at many of the sites it's really hard to figure out which one will be best. At the money I'm going to spend I sure wish there was a better way of knowing how these things really perform. Anyone who has had luck or trouble with scanners, I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks again
