Smile Hello, I need help fixing a picture

I am new to BioRust and have relatively no experience in photo manipulation and beautification. To my question, I am wondering can somebody help me fix a picture that has a huge rip in it, but most of the subject; moi, is still in the picture.
Here's the picture:

here's the link to the full size picture. its much more bigger and probably would get me banned or hazed with "STFU newb" pics lol.::http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9...age40023mg.jpg

I did try to fix it myself, but I crashed, burned and came up short in so many places.

These are my results::::

I just created a new layer, flipped the picture and set the blend mode to darken. I thought it would work or at least look ok, but I guess my face isn't as semetrical as I thought.

Also, can some help/tell me how I would get the scratches out of this
picture??

Thank you very much for your time.
Duane

Duane welcome to Biorust. You are probably looking for a quick fix answer to your photo problem, but, I have to tell you there isn't one. Photo restoration can take time.

I can offer you some links that contain some excellent tutorials and info on what to do and how to achieve the look you want. Don't know your experience level of PS, but, you should be able to follow the tuts. A couple of the tuts are pdf files and that should make it even easier to follow at your leisure.

The link at Designer Today is the one I like best.

Good luck on your restoration project and I look forward to seeing the results you achieve.

You have the right idea by mirroring the left side of the picture, but you don't need to mirror all the detail - doing so makes a picture look unnatural. I'd stick the mirrored duplicate into its own layer, and then delete all detail that is OK in the right hand side of the image, leaving only the detail lost by the tear.

bedlam123 is right about there being no quick fixes. Complex editing such as this is fiddly and takes lots of time. Thankfully, however, it is not difficult... unless you are short of time, of course...

I love doing these. They're so much fun - kind of like doing a puzzle. It makes me wish more of my photos had been ruined so that I could do this more.
Anyway, as said, this kind of thing does take some time and patience.
I took the liberty of downloading your original and messing with it a bit - not, necessarily, to do it for you - more to show that it can be done.
Here's what I came up with -

Here is just "you" on an easy to remove background - in case you want to put it on a different background -

I don't mean to step on anybody's toes, here, I just saw this and was inspired, which is kind of rare, nowadays.

You hit the nail on the head Zapphnath, thank you bedlam I am going to look at those tutorials as soon as my photoshop stops acting up, I was drawing something and the tabs at the top wont let me get into any options, so I can save my 2+hr of work that I have been doing. Thanks for all the advice, I know it's all time consuming, but I find when I do have time to do PS work, I really enjoy it and it calms me down. thanks everyone
