Have you tought about creating a b&w image and usinig a solid color to fill in the facial values and then airbrush some shadows. Just look at some of Alex Sinclair's work from Batman Robin allstars

Choose Colors...Or Black And White. Then Run Cutout In Photoshop. Outline With Black Or White Lines...Thick Or Thin Works. Just Play With It And Find The Medium.
