Cool Cartography!

Well, I was bored today and decided that i'd make a bunch of actions and brushes and stuff that will allow one to make a map with relative ease, and I do beleive I found the right way to do it. So if your doing something that requires a map feel free to E-mail caevryncartography@gmail.com and give me some names and i'll take it from there.

ecntrc: Actions are a way of automating a whole bunch of steps into a one-click effect. It's what is called a "macro" in some other programmes. You can even do dialogue boxes etc. Once you've recorded a sequence you can go back over and edit it until it is perfect... then every time you run the action you get exactly the same thing.

Andantonius: Strangely, I was looking for cartography resources when I found BioRust. There are some dedicated programmes for doing this sort of aerial view map, primarily for gamers, but I can see other uses.

The three main programmes I've found are Campaign Cartographer ($40) which is quite professional and has lots of companion products, Fractal Mapper ($40) and AutoREALM, which is free but unfortunately the results look poor.

I am sure it would be possible to assemble a good library of backgrounds, tiles, and brushes in order to make one's own maps in PS. But I wonder if it's worth the time given the dedicated tools these other software packages provide?

It's true that you can only get proper results in PS if you spend alot of time making brushes and patterns and actions etc etc... but seeing as I have alot of spare time, this is something i'll be constantly working on, so the results will be getting better and better every day, i've also, to make it more official, got a different E-mail for it:

caevryncartography@gmail.com

if you want a map made or if you want to be notified about updates, send the E-mail there

I will post more on this in the next couple of days, over on my blog. In the meantime, if people are interested in developing mapping resources for PS, I'd like to know.

Also bear in mind that the graphics themselves will be getting better and better as well, so after a few days it'll look quite proffesional.
