Brand New To This Forum

Hello everyone.......
Ive been working with photoshop about 2 years now but Ive seen alot of things across the web and I would be suprised if I know half the things alot of people know. So im expanding myself to try to learn everythign possible before I go off to college so I can have a solid springboard to work from. Hopefully All the tutorials and work done in this forum will help me to learn alot more and be a succesful designer in the future. I'll always be around if anyone just wants to talk or what not or willing to give me a few pointers...

Thanks in advance without forums like these I dont know where I would learn any of it. Can't wait to get posting.

At first I was going for Advertising and Marketing but Ive shyed away from that..Most likely Graphic Design or Web Design just becasue Its a broader spectrum of things to do and is not specifically dedicated to one line of work.. Could anyone possible tell me programs or things I should familiarize myself with if I wanna do graphic design in the future. Whats todasy world mainly revolve around program wise?

umm you should probably get familiar with flash, fireworks, photoshop, image ready, and illustrator. you should also look at some 3d graphic programs like 3d studio max, but i dont know too much about that

There are some basic apps you would surely need to be familiar with:

1: Graphics app (Like photoshop and paint shop pro(BAH!!!))
2: Vector app (Like illustrator, Flash and Freehand)
3: 3D app (3D studio max, Maya, Cinema 4D and off course Realsoft(5-0 wouldn't forgive me if I left this out))

All by all it is good to know a bit of everything, but it is essential that specialize in a few aspects of the wide variaty of programs there are available...

Hey JRG, im also going to college to study graphic design. The list malboroman has given seems pretty good. At your first year of college they tend to leave out 3d, this is because it confuses the less intelligent of students, lol.

You should do what i am doing and start learning some 3d before hand. This gets you some big respect from a room full of n00bs that are filter whores. The teacher should also then notice your potential.

I dont think you would need to look at all the 3d apps, just focus on one. I chose realsoft because it is a nice alternative to maya, it has some thing like 85% of the features maya has.

You just gotta keep on practicing. You also need to be damn swift with a pencil. I am pretty crappy at drawing but i am practicing my ass off, because you will need it in college.
