Hey JRG, im also going to college to study graphic design. The list malboroman has given seems pretty good. At your first year of college they tend to leave out 3d, this is because it confuses the less intelligent of students, lol.
You should do what i am doing and start learning some 3d before hand. This gets you some big respect from a room full of n00bs that are filter whores. The teacher should also then notice your potential.
I dont think you would need to look at all the 3d apps, just focus on one. I chose realsoft because it is a nice alternative to maya, it has some thing like 85% of the features maya has.
You just gotta keep on practicing. You also need to be damn swift with a pencil. I am pretty crappy at drawing but i am practicing my ass off, because you will need it in college.
