Photoshop can be loads of fun - especially at the earlier stages when each new thing you learn to do feels like you're performing some kind of hocus-pocus.
My suggestion is to hunt for and try as many tutorials as you can. Even if it's subject matter isn't something you think you'll be interested in, you're bound to learn something that you can put to use, elsewhere.

A few tips:

-Always -- ALWAYS -- duplicate your Background layer before making any modifications and leave that original one, on the bottom, as is. That way, it'll always be there, in case you mess something up and need to start over.

-Save early and save often. (For, pretty much, the same reason as above)

-Most importantly -- have fun!

Oh...welcome to BioRUST.

Zapphnath gave some good tips. I learned those by trial and error. Do some tutorials and mess around with Photoshop and you'll start to get the hang of it. Don't forget to ask help here since we are more than happy to help.

Easy as 1,2,9

Photoshoop scared me at first too but it's actually not too scary once you get into it and start to know your way around. It is complex if you want it to be but it can also be very simple as well. I learned a lot by experimenting and being brave enough to jump in and try stuff. I also bought a book by Scott Kelby called 'Photoshop 6 Down & Dirty Tricks' and that lifted the lid on loads of stuff for me...it is probably the best book I've bought as far as the PC is concerned.

Any book by Scott Kelby will help you. He's a Photoshop guru.
Check out PhotoshopTV - http://www.photoshoptv.com/ - a weekly half-hour show you can download (31 episodes, so far) in which Scott, along with Dave Cross and Matt Kloskowski, give hints, tips, tutorials, and news on all things Photoshop.

Don't let Photoshop scare you. It seemed a bit overwhelming to me at first, but after doing (or at least reading) dozens upon dozens of good tutorials I was able to pretty much find my way around. I was really overwhelmed when I first laid eyes on Blender3D, and had the icon setting on my desktop for at least 6 months before I got brave enough to really give it a try. I'm still a complete n00b at 3D modeling but am having fun. I just had to force myself to not let the program be the one to dominate. The same goes for Photoshop.

Whenever you come across a tutorial that might interest you, I suggest saving the page onto your computer so you can access it quickly should the need arise and so you don't have to worry about the site hosting it going down or something. It's also nice for guys like me since I'm on dial up (bah, I wish DSL or cable was available here) and can't be connected all the time. I have a seperate folder for each program and category I use regularly to save tutorials to (Photoshop, Blender, PHP, Wings3D, etc.).

I was almost 50 years old the first time I very reluctantly touched a computer - I thought I'd never be able to handle simple wordprocessing programs, let alone Photoshop, but ended up being totally captivated. Gingerbloke and Zapphnath mention Scott Kelby - his books and tutorials are a good (and fun!) way to learn. In general Photoshop books are expensive, but in the Used & New section of Amazon.com (and Chapters.indigo.ca in my case since I'm Canadian) you can get some great prices for the older books (Photoshop 6 and up). The countless free Web tutorials are a big help. Judging by your gallery submissions on Biorust, you're doing really well!

Yeah the Scott Kelby book I got cost me a small fortune and I also had to order it from the U.S.A as Britain is far behind the times as far as knowing about things like that! Thumbs up to Candlefish for giving me a mention...nice one!

Candlefish is right about Amazon.com; used books can be picked up real cheap and so far I have not had any problems with quality. Last time I bought an Illustrator book for $4.98US, shipping was $2.50US.
