Distort text in illustrator

How can i distort text but still have it stay perpendicular with the top and bottom of the image like in the picture below. I tried using envelope distort>make with top object and it distorts the text to the shape but it aligns the letters to the circle as opposed to straight up and down.

Probably not the most effective way but have you tried to make a square with an oval cut out, converting it to a path and typing inside? I'm still very much the novice with Illustrator so I apologise if the above suggestion sounds absolutely ridiculous lol but it does work in Photoshop.

Set your text.

Draw a shape which matches the shape you want your text to take.

Place the shape above the text on the same layer.

Select both the shape and text.

Choose Object > Envelope > Make with Top Object.

From there, you may need to use Object > Expand and then alter some of the letters individually.
