Centre an object on a page ?

In freehand there is an align tool that lets you select an object and automaticaly centre it on a page by clicking on a little grid type tool, this can also be used for lining multiple objects up vertically horizontally etc.

For the life of my I cannot see anything like this in Illustrator
Is there such a thing ?

Yes in Illustrator there is an Align palette. Check under the Window menu.
