Question

I started to practice some of the techniques i read about last night in Illustrator. It seems that once i get the hang of things it will work good. Although, i did have a bit of a problem figuring out how to use the inner and outer glow in Illustrator...as its not the same as in photoshop.

Also is there a way to put more than one stroke on a shape?

I'm moving this to the Vector Art forum, as you're more likely to get your questions answered there.

sweetsaradavis,

Try not to get too hung up on effects for your logo (unless you are specifically looking for a style that can only be achieved by effects). Take into account what you are going to be using the logo for, if the answer is a website then you can get away with a flashier logo, if you plan on using the logo on business cards or for a sign or anything like that, make sure you have a simplified version to use.

If you take a look at Logopond most of the logos that stand out as a great logo are very simple. It's easy to get caught up in what you can do with illustrator and photoshop and lose the initial design concept.

Mostly what you'll need in Illustrator is the pen tool, a bit of knowledge about gradients (maybe), strokes and the color palate and you're all set.

Here's a very simple tutorial about the pen tool to get you started in case you need a little help in that area. Pen Tool

Welcome, Good Luck and We can't wait to see the logo!!

If you'd like to add another stroke to a shape, select your shape and then go to your Appearance palette. If you don't see it, go to Window > Appearance. Click the little arrow in the top right of the palette and choose "Add New Stroke". You'll see a new layer for the stroke in the Appearance palette. You can move these layers above and below each other. So you could make your bottom stroke say 8 and then the stroke above that say 4. Keep in mind that the if your top stroke is bigger than your bottom stroke you won't be able to see it.

P.S. I am going to try and do a flame tutorial tonight.

another way of doing it, is to create a stroke on the object you want the extra stroke on, select that path, and go to Object>Path>Outline Stroke then it will create a compound path, you should be able to right click on it and go "release compound path" and it will give you 2 paths, 1 on the inside of the stroke and 1 on the outside of the stroke, then you are free to create another stroke on each of the new paths again.

If you're patient I'd wait until either Jacorre, or myrnana can answer, they're the resident illustrator guru's...
(hope i didn't confuse too much)

The easy route would have been to point you to some free clipart. But as requested, here's a simple tutorial to create a flame. Sorry didn't have time to create it as a tutorial on my site yet so I created two screenshots instead. They are attached. I'm sure everyone's approach to this could have a different outcome but I used this method hopefully to shed some light on some of Illustrator's features and functions. Hope this helps you!

Thank You!

Wow, everybody here has been so helpful! I didnt know what to expect when i joined here, but you guys are great!

Thank you Tamlin, for moving my thread, i'm still learning how to navigate around the site. This is actually the first forum i've ever been a part of.

Also, agentxi...thank you for your guidence, i will play around with the options you gave me!

and Jacorre...Thank you for that tutorial! You went above and beyond what i expected! I had a go at it real quick on the computer here at work, but i didnt quite make it happen. I figure i will try again this evening on my home computer so i can concentrate a bit more. I will say when i tried step 4 it only rounded the left side. But, like i said i will try at home so i can fully conentrate on it.

The logo is going to be used for a varitety of things - i.e. website, business cards, letterhead...you name it! Anything that goes with making a new business.

I could even use it to make a large print sign...as my job involves sign vinyl and large format digital printing material.

Anyway, back to work for me, i will have a look this evening and see what happens!
