Tutorial Problem

I do a lot of web design and photoshop so I thought it was time to get into illustrator. I tried this tutorial but for some reason I can't get it to actually work. I've managed to select both inner elipses, as some people were having trouble with, but when I click make opacity mask, I don't get the effect, I just see the original gradient circle. What's going on?

Thanks, I got it to work. Earlier I was copying the whole layer one instead of just the white ellipse.
