New to Illustrator, need a few tips.

I recently got Adobe Illustrator, and am feeling quite lost in it. My intended use of it is to scan in my inked and just good ol' pencil drawings and "solidify" the lines so I can more easily color them in Photoshop.

I guess my question is, what is the simplest way to have it make my lines recognizable as LINES so when I import it into Photoshop, I can more easily select sections to color or to make a layer with? A friend of mine told me that Adobe Illustrator was more suited for what I was trying to do in Photoshop.

Any tips/tricks or tutorials that I can find online would be appreciated.

Look for tutorials on Live Trace and Live Paint with Adobe Illustrator. Those two features would help you with what you're doing.

Try the following tutorial Using Live Paint in Adobe Illustrator CS2 (Video Tutorial) | Adobe Illustrator

Our very own Andy Gan has also written a couple of tutorials on tracing in Illustrator:

I'm not sure which version of Illustrator you or using. If you are using one of the newest versions, auto or live trace MIGHT work....but Illustrator is mostly for drawing and creating vector art....I would have more luck with a scanned image in Photoshop where I could adjust and control my levels and split my channels to darken, color, etc.

You can't scan directly into Illustrator. You have to scan into Photoshop then transfer your file and do what you need from there.
