Corel Painter Presets

I've just started feeling my way around (very tentatively) in Corel Painter - "traditional" art is not really my forte, but I like the idea of playing around with stuff like watercolours and oil paints without having to clean the brushes and clear up the mess afterwards.

Anyhow, here's my question: can you download extra "presets" for Painter like you can for Photoshop (you know, things like Brushes, Shapes, Gradients etc.) or are you pretty much limited to what comes with the program?

I've tried a quick search on You-Know-Where, but to be honest I didn't really know what to look for. Corel's website doesn't seem to be as informative as Adobe's. Any ideas/links anyone?

I realize this is an obviously numpty question, but I am a total noob with this program so feel free to point at me and laugh derisively.

Tamlin, yes you can download additional preset*joy to the world*; I'll dig out my info and post them. I luv Painter, like you the notion of easy clean-up is the big draw. BTW, what version are you using?

oh man! i love painter, I used it back in the day when it was called fractal painter by umm, Metacreations i believe.

Anyways, this is probably my favorite program ever to use for traditional painting, the brushes and canvas' really do make it look like as if you just painted it on canvas with oils, pastels, etc...

I really do like how you can "dynamically rotate your canvas" to help you paint curves and what not, kinda how you move your paper if you're drawing on paper...

Check out some of this guy's work, he does incredible work...has some tutorials on the program and even some brushes that he uses etc...
Ethereality.info: The art, music, photography, and writings of Robert Chang

I haven't used the prorgam in a very long time, but i'm sure it's even better than when i used to use it

*SideTracked: This also reminds me of this program called "project dogwaffle" it's a funny name, for a really cool painting program, They have a "pro" version, which i don't have, but i did use the free version a couple summers ago...and i must admit it allowed me to get the feel i wanted in my digital paintings... so check it out as well if you're bored...but Painter is truly awesome :P (wow a lot of praise for that program, no i don't work for them, nor do i get paid to say it )

Okay, yeah, at least as far as I know you have the latest version. Some of the links I give you may not be compatible with v10; just have to give it a try. Just an fyi, in case you don't know it, if you get something you take a liking to and it is in Psp, just convert it. You can convert it to psd by changing extension, then if I remember accurately you can convert to Painter.

Lots of links below, if you don't see them come thru right, just give me a PM and I'll list the URL's.

Have fun!

Last but not least David Gell, don't have his URL, but shouldn't be hard to locate.

As far as actual brushes, papers, textures, etc. I have so many I had to make an entirely new directory to hold it all. Many of them I have no idea where I got them. Be happy to share, but can't post them here, ya understand? Don't have permission.

Oh great! Need to check the sites out too

I am just starting to get the feel for Painter. I have IX and I see some changes that they have in X That I would love to have. So far I have only been able to figure out a way to use chalk, oil pastel, acyric, and just started with airbrush to a point where I feel like I can create with them close to the way I would want.
I still get confused by the grain and I can't think of the other one but I guess it determines how much paint goes on. I have seen brushes to download for painter though I'm not sure where. I think they were on some of the sites mentioned above.
I also haven't figured out how to take certain layers and combine them like you can in photoshop to create one layer. I think the last time I tried what I thought would work I deleted my layer. OOpps. I have a book but it seems to deal more with photography than creating your own work. There is a new book I want to get that seems to deal more with the traditional type art. It's to expensive for me to buy right now but I told my husband that's the next thing on my wish list.
Ill enjoy seeing how you guys are making out with the program so I can hopefully learn more from you. Have fun!
