Outline & Mesh
I haves object I created with outlines that I want to keep. The outline are just are just basic black strokes or varying thickness, but they are important to the style: comic.
I would like to color my objects using the mesh tool, but the mesh tool removes the outlines. My work around was to place a copy of the orginal online exactly over the coloured version. I am not fond of this approach. What other methods are there?

Can you not copy them onto their own layer?

as malart said. select the outlines with the magic wand tool (if they're not on their separate layer ) and put them in a new layer on top of the color you do with the mesh tool.
