Collapsing And Expanding Menu

I was wondering where I could find a good tutorial on a php / ajax expandable and collapsable menu.

Most of the ones I've found rely ENTIRELY on javascript. Which is all right, but I'm looking for something a little php based.

I'm trying to build a menu with the hyper link, and next to it is an image that drops down the menu when clicking it.

The expandable and collapsable menu tutorial by Scrowler on Biorust is very nice. The problem is that it uses arrays, causing the page to reload when expanding / collapsing the menu.

Thanks for any help.

The majority of the ones that I've seen use jquery. If you do a search for jquery accordion menus you'll get lots of results. Not sure about php based ones though.

Jquery

I've found several tutorials about jquery. It's an amazing concept.

However, I can't find one that allows multiple instances of the drop down, or any that keep the menu expanded when clicking on one of the links in the expanded part of the menu.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a tutorial that incorporates these requirements. I'm more concerned with keeping the menu expanded than multiple instances.

jQuery can do what you want.

You basically need to assign a class to a menu item using jQuery, then the CSS would tell that class to be expanded rather than hidden.

Yes, I used jQuery to do this on CISP - as you can see by attempting to navigate through the left navigation on the site.

Anyway, I believe I used this plugin. As you can see, it's pretty effective.

Note to smw: I'm pretty sure the navigation on CISP is what you described. As you can see by navigating within that site, I was able to keep the "category" open from one page to the next.
