Slicing webpage?

What's this I keep hearing about designing a webpage with slicing? What does this slicing do to the webpage?

Well, if you design a webpage in Photoshop you'll need to 'slice' the whole design up into smaller parts so that it loads gradually, and so that you can fit in custom content on every page (such as text, etc).

This tutorial is a bit advanced, but take your time, and it will explain about slicing effectively, it is written by Man1c_M0g, and is very good:

So I only have to worry about slicing if I designed the layout using Adobe Photoshop?

the way i see it is if u want people to come to your site and you have a large graphic website made in photoshop or psp or anything then you should always make sure it's jpg or gif and slice it! people don't like waiting around for larger graphics to load up (I know i don't) so it helps if you slice it!

If you don't have photoshop i think there are programs that do this i think not sure where though as I use photoshop

It is an option, and is the usual thing to help your make your design, unless you use html and css, and are comfortable enough making something that way.

Isn't that how most people design the professional looking webpages? Take http://www.team3d.net for example. Which technique was used to design this? I know it could be done with both but with a wild guess which technique was used to create that webpage?

that wouldnt really be slicing

that would be importing graphics into flash then puting the flash files into tables and code, thats the html/php/css techinqiue a slice site would be like http://www.cchraedm.com/fa/home.html mind you this isnt done yet but yah....team 3d isnt a slice site its a html/css/php site with flash

The tutorial above shows an example.. it is showing m0g's old design in the process of being sliced up.

Are most of the professional ones designed with Adobe Photoshop then sliced up? The way I design mines is open up Dreamweaver and start there.

It depends, not all sites are made in Photoshop, for instance, the sites I make use images in Phoroshop, that are saved, but I code them manually, and do not slice them up.

There is no 100% "correct way" to make a webpage, to make something look professional, just take your time, and if you don't understand how to do something, then just ask, or read around until you can fiqure out a solution.

However, your question was if most professional designs are made in Photoshop then sliced up, that would be that a majority are, but not all professional designs are that way.
