Help for a friend

I have a friend who wants to rework her website herself. From what I understand, she is a novice, and doesn't know that much about HTML. Does anyone know of a good HTML editor she could use?
She is on a PC, BTW.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

are you looking for something free, cheap or retail?

I use Dreamweaver exclusively myself. I like the split code/design view and the code it generates is much less bloated than say Frontpage or GoLive. Plus I like the way it handles the files with FTP etc.

I must add though... try to get her to learn at least some HTML... there are plenty of lessons and guides on the net for this. There are many times when tweaking code is going to be needed no matter what program is used (mostly for aesthetic reasons) and knowing what is going on in the code will help her dramatically.

I just can't imaging building a website without good HTML understanding unless a person is using templates where its just a matter of replacing graphics and text. But there could be new web building apps on the PC side I am not aware of that simplify things more than I am used to seeing.

I have to agree with you on that, Synthetic. Except for the part of equalizing FrontPage with GoLive. FrontPage is a good program to start with, even if itīs known to create a lot of crapcode.
But GoLive is still a part of the Adobe family and now with the new: GoLive 9, the interface is just like CS3. I like the way how well it works together with Photoshop. I can work directly with Psd- files, and the “save for web” options are always there (as smart objects).
Adobe is still developing GoLive, even if itīs now more or less, in the in the shade of the great Dreamweaver.

GoLive lover.

I tried first version of GoLive and I liked the grid layout idea and some of the other features but... many times I just found the code to be confusing and a little bloated. But haven't tried any newer version. But... last I heard about a few weeks ago... GoLive is dead. Adobe is dropping it because it doesn't feel need to have 2 web developing apps now that it has the Macromedia line with Dreamweaver. Now I might be wrong because it was read on forum but... it was the NAPP forum and most seemed to acknowledge it. It also appears that Dreamweaver will get a new interface soon too.

Dreamweaver CS3 works well with Photoshop and Flash (which is partly why I prefer it I suppose) and offers several of the features found in Fireworks and ImageReady of past as well.

Its just what you get used to using... like a Mac or PC

Im there with you synthetic...I use dream weaver all the time, its really handy that it is compatible with all the extensions from adobe as well, so that a big plus. Another great thing about dreamweaver is, is that it can be as difficult as you want it to be. the tooltips can be really handy, and are great for speeding things up. At the other hand there are a lot of extra almost never in use options....

Back on topic, I would recommend her 2 things. The first thing is to get an version of dreamweaver(she might want to pick 8 instead of CS3 because of the costs), its really handy and it has a wysiwyg part to it.

The second thins is, that she pays a visit to W3Schools Online Web Tutorials To get some knowledge about HTML(she should do the whole HTML class kinda thing)

I hope this works out for her

GoLive's "Grid" feature created complete **** code. Yes it worked but it was non-standard, non-compliant, and just a pain in the ass should you need to edit it with anything other than GoLive.

Dreamweaver is okay... but just okay. Yes it's the most popular. But it's got it's issues as well.

A good clean text editor and a browser are all you really need.

Yeah Thats what I always recommend to people who want to do webcoding, but in this case she wants to update and clean up here own site...nothing more nothing less. And in such a case an programm like dreamweaver comes in handy to assist you. Even if the program has issues(yeah I know).

Anyhow, could you maybe post a link here to her site? Im kinda curious now
