Ms Publisher 2003 page center problems

Hi all new to this forum. Ive designed a page in ms publisher 2003 and uploaded as a test at
Home
However ive run into problems when trying to center the pages on any format. As im aware publisher doesnt allow you to do that in 2003 and the filtered webpage it saves didnt respond to changes well in frontpage 2003 either.
Ive tried added center to the body and stuff as suggested in some other threads but it seems to badly distort the layout or other affects.
Ive added the code for the index page for people to look at. All im trying to do is center the page on any format leaving white space either side, with the header at top of page not half way down.
Any help would be appreciated.
David

See if this helps: http://forums.biorust.com/html-php-a...g-website.html (Need help centering website)

I'm no expert, but I suspect that Publisher isn't the best tool to create web pages - isn't that mainly a DTP application?

You're right, it isn't the best. In fact, it's one of the worst possible things you can use.

ndaar,
The code generated by Publish has a lot of this:
Code:
position:absolute;width:7.9319in;height:12.3902in
When you use position: absolute; you can never center content correctly for everyone. It may be centered if the browser window is 800 pixels wide, but it won't be centered at all if the browser window is 1200 pixels wide. In short, the code generated by Publisher is NOT suitable for a proper web site. In fact, there are currently no Microsoft applications that can build a solid, modern web site properly. You're better off looking at something like NVU or other freeware/shareware web building application. Forget about Microsoft when it comes to web building.

Hey tamlin. I tried the link you suggested before i posted didnt quite work. Was centered for any computer (or rather parts of it were) But it created scroll either side of it on all computers and it didnt start at top of page.

Jolt i realise MS publisher isnt the best for creating webpages, just it was easier to make one in that program. Im sure there must be a way of centering it as i know other people have used MS publisher in the past.
I cant really use any web programs but MS ones so not sure what to do if i cant get it sorted.
Anyone else got any suggestions

Like I posted, the issue with MS applications is they rely heavily on position: absolute; with that property on every container it's impossible to center a page. In addition, the code is using INCHES for measurements.... really bad idea.

The problem with using Microsoft applications is that every application they produce seems to be riddled with with this "Bill knows best" attitude that tries to second-guess what you want to do and then does it for you - whether you want it to or not. This is most obvious in apps like Excel and Word, but also extends to creating HTML - even in FrontPage, which is supposed to be a web design app! Even if you can figure out where all the superfluous code is and rip it out, each time you edit a page bloody FrontPage puts it back in again 9 times out of 10.

I don't understand why you say "I cant really use any web programs but MS ones" - is this some sort of company policy, or what? Even if you can't get something like Dreamweaver there are lots of freeware/shareware editors out there as Jolt says. The one I used many years ago to learn what little I do know about HTML is still available, and it's free. It's called HTML Kit: HTML Kit for more than editing HTML
