Macs would not come with Firefox preinstalled...
Apple is fully supporting the Safari browser.
It is likely that the University insisted that the company who got the contract for the equipment install Firefox or perhaps there was even licensing issues with Safari.
Mac's slowly earning increased market share through better marketing... but the use of Safari is only a tenth of the number of Mac's out there...
As for the Mac vs. PC debate, it really really comes down to personal choice and experience. No one can argue that there is far greater support in terms of software and applications for PC, but OS dependency is very soon going to be a non-issue.
Mac's are now shipping with Intel based processors which gives them the ability to run PC Operating Systems and Applications... this will severely reduce the PC's dominance but does it mean that Mac's are now just a brand name PC?
The real debate should be over Windows vs. OSX vs. Linux
Cheers!
Mike.
