Coding pages in Mozilla
Hi Folks;
Does anyone know if I can code a page that will allow me to use an mp3 file for background sound in Mozilla browsers? Wav files are to big that the slide show I'm making is over before before the sound loads....

You can use a Flash element to play MP3's... There are lots of free ones around, but the better ones are commercial...
I understand that the FLAMPlayer Module available at flamplayer.com is pretty good and it's free. http://www.flamplayer.com/
Now that said.. be prepared for an onslaught of messages as to why it's poor form to have sound automatically start playing on a website!

This can also make a user's browser lock up and crash.

Mike;
Thanks for the info, and I do understand it's a bad idea. I have 1 reason for doing it, the owner of the website wants it. I made the mistake of putting a flash show(with their pick music) on DVD for them to show around, and they can't understand why I can't do it on the website. I can't seem to explain the file size/download time constraints to their satisfaction, So I coded a 1 minute looping mp3 on the site for the IE users, but a WAV of any size is to large for the Mozilla browsers. It's no win.....
Thanks anyway,
Dana

There must be a way. Have a small Flash window that plays the music (have it as an object in the page, rather than have it as 'Background music' aka. page properties object)?

Turvas;
It's worth a try, Don't guess you'd have an example, by any chance?
Thanks either way

Sorry, I don't have any examples. I don't really create webpages, but I'm sure that someone can help you out.
One thing though: Why do you keep the slideshow and the sound separate if you want them to play at the same time? Why not put them together in one flash window?

It used to be a big problem with internet explorer 6, fairly sure it has been resolved in 7 though. Not sure what used to cause it, but it happened on quite a regular basis with sites playing music, primarily flash based sites.

Well, as much as I HATE Internet Explorer, i have to say i've visited more than anyones fair share of sites with autoplay music and never had it cause a lock up...
Flash has been an exceptionally stable vehicle through which to deliver rich media...
I suspect any crashes related to sound would have more to do with poorly configured audio drivers on an individual system than with the coding or browser...
I looked through forums as well and other than a suggestion not to initiate sound in the first 3 frames of a movie, i wasn't able to come up with any documentation that suggested a browser issue...
I'll keep my eyes open though!
Thanks,
Mike.

The software (xatshow) I'm using puts the music I've chosen outside the "object" boundry for the flash movie. If I try to put in in, the sound ceases:
here's the code
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0" width=943 height=578 id=xatshow align=middle>
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name=movie value=xatshow_flash.swf /><param name=quality value=high />
<param name=FlashVars value="shw=2007_Show_Horses.xml">
<param name=bgcolor value=#000000 />
<embed src=xatshow_flash.swf quality=high bgcolor=#000000 width=943 height=578 name=xatshow FlashVars="shw=2007_Show_Horses.xml" align=middle allowScriptAccess=sameDomain type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.xat.com/update_flash.shtml" />
</object>
<bgsound src="2007_Show_Horses.mp3" loop="-1">
Oh well, I guess I've riden this horse to death.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions,
Dana

@Dana - You could always try setting the sound as purely something that is played using streaming and the default windows media player. I don't have the code on hand, but I'll look it up later. However, getting this and the flash to be in sync (?) will be tough.
@Mike - I actually read about this "phenomenon" first in a coding book, I never personally experienced it. I'm just trying to remember which book, and if I do, I'll quote the passage.
