Jolt is exactly right... the most important information you want to deliver should be 'Above the fold'... it's an old newspaper term referring to the most important news always appearing above the fold. When you see the newspaper lying flat, the top of the first page is visible, the bottom is folded under and not visible.
This has, unfortunately, led some website owners to over crowd information on the first page, and in some cases, above the 450px mark...
Too much density will counteract the effect... if there's too much to look at, nothing will get read. It's good practice to use white space to visually seperate items you want noticed first...
Web 2.0 principles are very dependant on reduced clutter, increased value, and lots of white space... even nifty little badges to catch attention!
