First Website.

Hi, I'm 15 years old and I made my first website the other day. I put this topic on here so I can get some feedback and some ideas of what else to do. I also would like to know of some code tutorials so i can learn how to do it for a better site. All comments welcome and the site address is Worthing Water Polo so take a look. Its best viewed in internet explorer because it messes up in mozilla firefox.

Well, there are lots of very experienced and talented web designers here who will no doubt be able to advise you on the specifics of coding and design. The only comment I would make is: don't make a site that only works properly in one browser. IE may still be the most popular, but more and more serious web users are abandoning it in favour of Firefox (I certainly won't use anything else). Also, let's not forget about the Mac and Linux communities. I recently saw a signature in some forum or other that said "If your site doesn't work in Firefox, you're doing something wrong", and I can only echo that sentiment.

Having said that, I'm sure the BioRUST web gurus will be able to point you in the right direction.

hehehe... I always say "If it's best viewed in Internet Explorer, it's best not viewed at all!"

I had a quick look, and if the mess up you are referring to is the text exceeding the boundaries of the display area, the fixes are simple...

I notice you're not using CSS, and your site is frames based (not generally favoured) but if you want to post your code here, I'll be happy to give you some pointers...

Mike.

EDIT: HOW RUDE!

I completely forgot to say that I thought you did a great job... especially for a first attempt... If anything, i'd say it's a little too "bubble-gum" for a professional sporting organization but it's simple and easy to use...

Thanks for sharing.

You can tell how inexperienced I am because I have not got a clue what CSS is. I have just found out that Brinkster has a limit to how much I can upload and is not allowing my site to shown until midnight. How dumb is that! Anyway thnks for the comments and shall i send the code to you via e-mail? Any help is appreciated!

That's one of the many problems with free web hosting. You might want to look into paying for hosting for your club's site. You can get some really good deals at the moment, and consider all the plus points: your own domain name, multiple email addresses, complete control over your content, no ads, and no bandwidth restrictions (unless you create a really high-traffic site).

oof, website is over the daily bandwidth allowance. Are companies starting to limit customers daily now? That's pretty lame of the host.

It's a free host, so it's the only way they have to maintain proportionate use of their resources...

The more you pay, the fewer restrictions you have, but we are never free of all restrictions

Mike.

Ya, I guess I've just never used a host that regulates your daily bandwidth allowance. I've always used large shared and currently split a server with a friend of mine.

Yeah I thought you did a great job for your first time out. Easy navigation not to hard on the eyes. Few things I noticed a t a glance is that the Header box and the boxes underneath dont like up square to each other. picture to show it

Im not sure what this is showing here but its on the front page almost looks like a mistyped dash?

Again great job on a first try for a website. Also if your club is looking for hosting I ahve a freind that runs a hosting site and his prices are some fo the ebs ton the net. Go check him out and drop him a email. www.awds.net He has been the host for a few of my websites and I have almost zero downtime and hes jonny on the spot as far as finding out why a site is running slow if and when it happens.

Good luck hope some of my babble helps =)

One big mistake here: Don't hope that all people out there have 1024x768 resolution screens. Don't make your website fit only one resolution! For a 800x600 your site would look too large. But for a 1280x1024 (like me) or larger, your site looks small and offset. Just my two cents.
