Outlook Signature Problem

Hi folks,
Sorry if this has been touched on before but I have had a search and couldn't see anything along these lines so appologies if I have missed it. I am extremely new to HTML coding...in fact I know nothing about it apart from what I acheived yesterday on my homepages. I managed to put a link in that took you to another gallery or web site...success was sweet. I then thought I'd paste the same links in as signatures in Outlook Express so that every e-mail I sent had three very neat looking links at the bottom that took you to URL's with large addresses. Nope....it just prints out three huge clickable things at the bottom like this:- <ahref="http://www.zazzle.com/Gingerbloke*">J.L.Hill's Cornucopia</a>
What am I doing wrong? Am I being stupid? Do I need to wear a pointy hat with a large D on it? Any help would be help indeed. Maybe I should of listened more at school...not that that would have helped because computers were not invented back then! Cheers.

You have to make sure that your e-mail format is set to HTML - or else you'll just get the HTML code outputted as pure text.

I'm sure it is set to HTML though. It's not showing it as pure text anyway...it's showing half of the code and half of the address as a clickable link. It's looking like this:<ahref="http://www.zazzle.com/Gingerbloke*">J.L.Hill's Cornucopia</a> It's driving me nuts. I've tried everything.

Hmmm. Does Outlook Express give you the opportunity to edit the signiture in a HTML editor? It could be that outlook is being irritating and setting the HTML as text. I use Outlook myself (albeit the full edition), and the problem is always solved by exporting the siggy to an external application (in my case frontpage), and editing it there.

Hey Gingerbloke - I think I've sussed it. I don't normally use Outlook Express (I'm a Thunderbird kinda guy), and I don't know if I've got the same version as you (I've got OE6 installed on my machine), but I think what you need to do is to select View > Source Edit when you create a new message. That will give you 3 tabs at the bottom of the message screen - Edit, Source and Preview. Click on Source and you'll be in scary HTML-land. Just paste your link code into the body of the message (i.e. between the <BODY> and </BODY> tags). Click on Edit to get back to normal email-writing mode.

Attached are a couple of screen shots of how it looked when I tried it.

Hope this helps!

PS: After all the above, I discovered there is an easier way: just type whatever text you want to appear as a link, then highlight it and click on the Create A Hyperlink button on the toolbar (the one that looks like a globe with a little chain link on it). A dialog box appears to allow you to enter the real URL. Type it in, click OK and the job's a good 'un.

To be honest Man1c M0g I wouldn't know an HTML editor if I had one hit me in the face. I'm amazed i got this far with my gallery homepages. I tried putting the signatures into notepad and then loading it into Outlook but it's just done the same thing. I am going loopy trying to solve this. I love a challenge. I am by the way running on windows 98 (ancient relic) but it's fine with other sigs.

Outlook and Outlook Express, like many other Microsoft packages, suffer from an "I know what you want better than you do" syndrome. Whenever they see "http://" or "www." in a piece of text, they assume that what follows needs to be rendered as a hyperlink, so they do it - whether you want it or not! Flaming annoying at times!

Tamlin! Wonderful stuff. I have now three hyperlinks on an e-mail ready to go. There is however one small problem. I typed them in myself and used the little chain linked globe to put in the Url's needed...and cannot find a way to create them as automatic signatures now. One old problem goes away to be replaced by another. In the words of Homer Simpson "Stupid Comuters!"

OK - slightly different approach if you want to create a signature:

First, create your signature file as an HTML document. Copy the following and paste it into Notepad, change the URLs and the text links to the ones you want to use, then save it as a .htm file (call it, say, Sig.htm):

Code:
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
</head>

<body>
<a href="http://www.google.co.uk">Google</a><br>
<a href="http://www.biorust.com">BioRUST</a><br>
</body>
</html>

In Outlook Express, select Tools > Options then click the Signatures tab.

Click New to create a new signature.

Under Edit Signature, Select File and then browse to wherever you saved Sig.htm

If you want to add this signature automatically to all your new messages, check the box marked Add signatures to all outgoing messages

If not, leave the box unchecked - you can always add your signature at the time of writing a new message by selecting Insert > Signature.

You can add more advanced HTML code to prettify your signature if you want, but this should get you up and running, at least.

THANK YOU TAMLIN! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Success thanks to you and your marvellous code. That'll teach me to play with things I know nothing about! I certainly couldn't have done it without you hammering away at the problem. BioRUST is so cool when your backs against the wall and you think there's no way out! I tried to give you some more user rating for this one but it says I need to put my reputation about (he he) before I can dish out some myself (I only have a rating of 1). Daft thing is I have loads of Bio credits (175) but don't need to download anything at the moment so I'm earning but cannot give. Sorry. Thank you thank you thank you thank you. You are a star. A rock and roll star! Funnily enough I used to be one of them too...and I road crewed for Motorhead at one point plus various other major bands. Thanks again.

Hey, no worries. In the words of The Pretenders, "The reason we're here...is to help one another".

I remember very well going to see Mötorhead in Cleethorpes (!!) back in the late 70's. Loudest band I've ever seen - couldn't hear a thing for days afterwards! Ah...the good old days!

Tamlin...if you think it was loud in the audience you should of tried it up on stage whilst trying to throw greasy bikers back into the audience...man,that made you feel alive! Bernie Tormé was one of the loudest gigs I went too...well it was...up until I saw Rammstein in London a couple of years back. Toasty!
