.:Shopping Cart Blues

Hey people. I have a client who wants me to design a website for her jewellery business. She wants a shopping cart that accepts credit card details. The problem is that she wants the design complete ASAP so i don't have time to code the entire shopping cart. Basically i want to resolve the following problems:
  • Where can i download a simple shopping cart?
  • Should i use asp or php to implement it (which is better)?
  • Will i need to have a database on the FTP server?

OoooOh, BIIIIG subject here! If you want to download a decent pre-made shopping cart you can find lots of them over on http://www.hotscripts.com . There's an awful lot, but the best are, unfortunately, commercial in design. PHP is best IMHO because it has more people supporting it... which is helpful when you have a problem.

Oh... and yes... the best shopping carts *WILL* need an appropriate database!

Thanx for the tip...one more question, how will i implement the credit card issue? Is it easier to create a paypal account or how does it work?

Again, that depends upon the software. Some give you access to credit-card facilities (for a leasing fee), whereas others piggyback onto percentage-based systems like paypal. Depends on the volume of transactions you are expecting I suppose...

I have been impressed with Zen-cart. It is free open-source software with very good functionality and easy installation. There is an active user forum and plenty of MODS and template packs to customize the cart.

Accepting credit cards directly will mean a merchent account and will need to be purchased, not an inexpensive way to go. Otherwise, there are plenty of services out there to help you handle credit card transactions (PayPal, Authorize net, etc.)

Good Luck,
Ray
