Destructive Criticism

I'm not sure about anyone else here, but I don't like to focus on the good things that people do in their work as much as I like to focus on the bad things. The same way I focus on anything I do. I'm always picking out what's wrong with the piece and setting anything good aside. Even though I find this helps myself to learn from mistakes and hopefully become a better artist, should I critique others work the same way? I mean some people take criticism pretty hard, even putting aside their work for long periods of time because they seem to think they've failed for some reason. However, I don't think false praise should be given out as much as it is. Maybe I seem a little brutish but no one gets better from constant praise. Note: Not targeting the people at the BioRUST forums, just people in general.

it is human nature to critize each other in a way to make ourselves feel better from our own shortcomings..

i prefer to praise a person for what they do, even i cannot stand it myself..

I prefer to look at it this way - many companies actually pay groups of individuals to critique their products, find out whats good, whats bad, etc. It is the mechanism by which big companies keep continually improving their services. If you can't take constructive criticism you can't improve and, therefore, you'll never reach your goals. Accepting negative criticism may be hard, but think about it this way - without it, you are destined to be mediocre for the rest of eternity. 'Nuff said...

I totally agree with you. I see alot of "this is my first try on a wallpaper" or something and people say "ill give it a 90 just because its your first try". I think that all works should be critiqued/rated at the same level.

I'm a complete graphics newbie, but when i post my first skin or something im gonna make sure to add "please dont critique on the fact that im a newbie".

Whatever.

A very good point there Evdawg! I never like ranking/rating systems myself because they can be swayed by personal bias and those little throwaway comments you mention like 'its my first skin/wallpaper/whatever'. A far better indication of the quality of your work (especially skins) is how often it gets downloaded. People can say nice things and give high ratings, but if the majority of people take one look at it and go elsewhere, it reflects badly on the quality of your work.

I try to focus on a little bit of both. I understand where you're coming from though. I think it's just human nature.
