Help on which Linux OS

I am looking for an operating system that is basic and has not got all the added software. I just want an OS and Gimp to work on very basic computers for the village photographic club. I have Win 98 on some and WinXP on others. Any ideas? I went to a Linux forum, but as usual they computer geeks that don't want to give simple answers or see simple solutions.

For a desktop OS I'd probably recommend Ubuntu - its simple, doesn't require much configuring, and runs everything that you want. Just make sure you do your groundwork for wifi and soundcard drivers, though, as linux tends not to support them right out of the box.

The problem with Ubuntu is that it is over loaded with all the software. The only thing I want is Gimp.

I use Centos 5 myself. Its very configurable and rock-solid stable... but not amazingly friendly for newbies. If you have a little experience with operating systems i'd still give it a go though...

AFAIK you can specify which components to install when you do it. So you can ditch everything you don't want and stick to GIMP.

Mog is right, you can choose what software packages you want installed. At the worst, you'll have to remove unused packages. As long as you install from the CD version, it will be pretty minimal anyway.
