Help on buying laptop?

I am planning on buying a lap top. I dont know much about them and I would like to get one that will work well with photoshop and my 3D Max software . I want to keep the price around $1000.00 give or take and I will be buying in the USA. Any body got any recommendations on what I should get?

I found one in that price range with those specs on Craigslist! It's a macbook and I love it! It is also good for podcasting.

Macs do pretty well for graphics stuff. As for photoshop, it depends which version you are running on which Mac. CS doesn't run optimally on my Macbook pro, since CS is written for PowerPC. CS3, on the other hand, runs slightly faster (and handles my tablet better, and crashes less frequently), since it is a native Intel application.
Hope that helps!

Good luck with the 3D apps on a laptop for that price. They will work but... don't expect blazing fast screen renders considering the graphic card capabilities of laptops vs. desktop models.

Not trying to turn this into Mac vs. PC debate but... I have been Apple fan before Mac were introduced... wanted a cheap laptop for web design (need to check stuff on the PC side of things) and got a new HP with Vista few months ago... I have Adobe line on it and it works but... it also reminds me very much why I am still an Apple fan and I wish I had just saved more cash and got a MacBook Pro (get them refurbed from Apple store for decent price) and ran Bootcamp with Windows on it instead.

Considering your budget and your requirements, there's only one thing to do - steal a powerful laptop! Now, being serious, there's only one answer to give you - you won't find a laptop for your needs in that price range. My best advice would be to get a decent desktop for your purpose - after the latest price drops, I think you can easily build a system with 4GB of fast, low-latency DDR2 memory, some Intel Q6600 CPU or better(around $200, after the latest price drops), two fast SATA2 drives for a RAID setup, and a NVIDIA 9600GT/8800GT/maybe a Radeon HD 3870.

Considering your 3D needs, the laptop will surely heat up like hell, so I don't see it surviving for a long time in these conditions.

In the uk pc world has a seperate site called pc business world where they sell clearance computers i know of some people who have had laptops at top spec with the old xp package rather than vista which has problems with some adobe programs like go live and cs3.
It could be worth you checking out the major companies in your area to see if they have a clearance section.
My friend got a toshiba with 19in screen 2gb ram 120 g hardrive for £400 with xp.

I must say that If you want to run your 3DS Max on a laptop at full-settings, that means really looong render times, and probably some crashes now and than!

If you just want a laptop, I recommend compaqs, as they got a pretty good price-performance ratio (mine had).

If you want something to run you max on, than get youself a desktop!! They get way stronger for way less!! And I know what Im talking about...as I have both :P

Oh and about the vista thing, running vista on a laptop means that it must be a high-performance laptop! As vista requires a lot of memory and procesor speed to run smoothly....Microsoft is realeasing some "service-packs" somewhere this year, and they should speed up vista!! So if you think about vista on your laptop, wait for those service packs, and see how fast vista gets

A good point, well made.

Oh - and Compaqs do still exist: Compaq - Make it happen with Presario notebooks, desktop computers and accessories.

The first thing to do(to get back on topic) is really simple, ask yourself the question:
What Im a going to do with it? and after that one ask yourself the question: How much money do I want to put into this?

If you answered both questions...go get yourself you laptop!!
