Zapp Brannigan’s Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0

This is your captain speaking. Our new mission brief has been established.

Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 – Storyline

Kif and I have been working on an ongoing project idea to keep you, our starship crew, on your toes. It is listed in Branningan’s Law section 4.A that if you fail to participate in this project, I can legally shoot you and we wouldn’t want that would we? No! Good!

There’s rumours of a lot of alien life out there we haven’t killed yet, but before we can tangle with the purple-headed ones of the Erimus system, we must practise in a skill known as Graphic Design, Illustration and Photo-manipulation. These creatures in Erimus system are weak to such skills, so let us practise them to slay them once and for all.

Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 – Brief

In order for us to dispose of the alien scum in the Erimus system, we must work as a team. No matter your skill level, rank and status within this community and industry sector, we have no choice but to co-operate.

The Zapp Brannigan’s Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 is setup for each crew member (current and future) to continue a graphical assault project while working as a team. This will help develop your skills, push your creativity to the limit, learn from others and have fun along the way.

The Brief will be entitled – Project Biorust

Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 – How It Works

The project will be started by your loyal Captain, Zapp Brannigan.

I will post an image and the first person to read the thread will then add to their version of the image created in the last post. The person who reads the thread next will then take the second image and create their adaptation of the last persons work, and so on.

This will basically be like a ‘Graphics Battle’, but consider this as a ‘Graphics Community Project’, where there is no winner and the ‘battle’ is ongoing, so people who want to join in whenever they want can.

‘Graphics Battles’ can be fun, but a lot of people don’t enter because they don’t think they can win. This is different, as there is no winner and it gives everyone of mixed skill to work together and collaborate as an entire community. Another thing that puts people off when entering battles is the time needed to create your work, then wait for the entrance period to end and voting to start and finish.

Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 - Rules

1. Use any style (vector, grunge, tech, illustration, stock/render, photomanip, typography etc)
2. There is no main theme, just your creativity.
3. Use at least one design element (e.g. background, foreground, focus point, character, text, layout, décor etc) from the previous artwork posted.
4. Use typography (text) on your work to either continue a ‘story’ from the previous work, or a title for your work contained within your image.
5. The image must remain the same size throughout all contributions.

Summary:

Thread starter creates an image, poster one takes the image and makes their version following the rules above, poster two takes poster ones image and adapts their work into it and posts their design, poster three takes poster twos work and creates their own piece based around it and so on.

Note:

You can change the image slightly, or totally revamp it and create something others wouldn’t expect from it. You can also contribute more than once to the project if you see future artwork take a different direction that you want to add to with additional work.

Example:

Thread starter creates their image…

Poster one creates their version of the image following the above rules…

Biorust Community Collaboration Project 1.0 – Lift Off!

Prepare the men Kif, the project begins straight away. Remember crew – teamwork is the only thing that will put an end to the aliens in the Erimus system. Let us destroy them together!

HERE’S THE IMAGE THAT GETS THE BALL ROLLING

Quite a simple photo manipulation to get things started. If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me or post below.

Good luck with your training, we need to be at our best for when we enter Erimus system!

Sergeant-Graphican Turvas reporting for duty sir! I couldn't agree more with the capten: This sort of training is of most necessary sort.

Nice work Sergeant-Graphican Turvas and supertackyman.

Considering the thread has had over 50 views and only two entries so far, I'll take this chance to do another quick sample, while other people get the idea of how it works.

I'm going to totally change this around with my next entry, in hope to inspire others with a different direction. I've taken supertackys full addition and added extra elements, combined with some colour echoing on my text from supertacky's piece, while experimenting with some typography styles.

As you can see, all you need to do is keep at least one 'design element' from the previous work, while adapting your own version of what you see, in any media or style. It doesn't have to include the entire artwork, but just sections of it, if you wish.

Edit- Thanks for the sticky Mr Mod ^_^

123 views in three days with a sticky and still only two people interested out of 40k+ members is a bit...odd lol

[reverse-psychology]Other communities often spam stuff like this up quickly. Is this too hard or complicated for BioRUST members?[/reverse-psychology]

If anyone has any questions, or needs some ideas on how to continue from the last image let me know. Other than a few basic rules this is pretty much a free-for-all in terms of what you can do.

I think that people just dont find it attractive. All yuo really have to do is create an image with the same size as the first one... Not very interesting nor challenging, Zapper.

To be brutally honest, all the rules and regulations in the original post put me off. I'm a maverick - I don't play by the rules...I'm sure you can relate to that, Captain.

That's the best part of it. The community has to make it interesting and a challenge for the person following your work.

Taking someone elses image and turning it into your own work is the highest point of creativity possible within graphic design. It's the key element of receiving a 'brief' and completing it in your vision and imagination. lol

There are basically no rules, so everyone can add in anyway they wish to. It's a test for creativity and freedom to do what you want while getting given a basis on what to work on.

It's just very odd that this sort of thing is very popular within other graphics communities, but here there's nobody really interested in working with other people to improve their design skills lol

Ah well, at least I tried. But I still can't understand the negativity considering everyone here is interested in design lol it really is quite odd.

I would have said that creating an image from scratch is the highest point of creativity possible, but...hey...each to his own.

It's very rare a designer 'starts from scratch' as most use someone elses stock, render, font or resource.

But due to how long it takes to prepare such elements, speed is the key factor in todays design and most modern designers simply have no time to do such. What a designer always has, regardless of how you view the issue, is that each designer always has a brief to work around. The brief varies from how much creative freedom you're allowed and how it's presented, leading up to how it's interpreted by the designer.

But without getting into a technical debate about how designers design, here's some samples of previous 'collaboration projects' from other communities who understand the similar creativity displayed on this thread...

...as you can see (or should see) is that the first image acts as a brief, followed by each designers interpretation of the brief following on from the last. It highlights the strongest point of creativity in a collaboration of designer and brief when working within a design group.

If people find it 'boring' is because they lack the ability to design and make something they consider 'boring' to look what they consider 'good'.

I ran into Kif the other day at the coffee shop, he wasn't too happy to still be working for you. He didn't have anything nice to say about it.

That's because Kif wants to be a designer, but is unable to design when given the opportunity to shine.

I think this thread should now be removed as a sticky, as the support for a community project is basically nonexistent here.

Thanks to whoever made this thread sticky though, and for the couple who participated, it was worth a try, but sadly, there's nobody actually interested in a group project challenge.

On the contrary - people will participate if the idea catches the imagination. Here's a couple of recent examples:
