Well my friend...i don't think it's funny...i think it's sad.
Some people turn a simple opinion into some kind of war. I do not hate Firefox or anyone but i like Internet Explorer...if that makes me someone's enemy...well, we just have to live with that.
This kind of behaviour makes me sad because i really like Biorust,
Paulo

How sad I feel for you...

I can just imagine the amount of spyware, adware, and malware you've had to rid yourself of... or worse, don't know is there.

Just the fact that Internet Explorer cannot be removed from my computer is an insult and a clear indicator of it's threatening nature. The fact the most key Windows features cease to operate without a working IE makes me wonder what Gates is really keeping tabs on...

I also hold great respect for my right to choose and not to blindly swallow the built in poorly developed and dangerous piece of MS Bloatware that's full of security exploits and backdoors...

As a developer, I have a great respect for ANY browser that adheres to coding standards.... Firefox is not the only one... alas, Internet Explorer has never been one.

As a person who highly depends on my computer for business and recreation, i refuse to risk downtime because some market research company found a way to exploit IE and track my internet usage or some wannabe hacker read a tutorial on how to blast IE users and bog down their internet connection.

I also greatly value my freedom from Norton Antivirus and the like that hold my machine hostage... something frequent IE users would be insane to do...

Anyone who prefers Internet Explorer does so most likely because it is what they are used to... and they don't like change... even when it's for the better.

Don't even get me started on the coders who make sites "Optimized for Internet Explorer" or worse, "Must Be Viewed With Internet Explorer"....

Considering that Windows Users hold more than 95% of the PC Market making Internet Explorer automatically available to that very same 95%, it tells a story that Internet Explorer holds a rapidly decreasing 78% share of the browser market. Note that firefox is climbing as fast as IE is falling.

Source: Market share for browsers, operating systems and search engines

We're not trying to woo anyone over to our side, we're just trying to do everyone a favour....

If you don't like firefox now, think of it the next time you spend 6.5 hours cleaning nested spyware and phantom processes out of your registry...

Mike.

I find it interesting that no one has mentioned Opera or any other type of browser. I know it was FF v IE, but I am sure if someone had another point of view they would have come forward.

IE can be removed... You just have to enter the windows cd and then remove it from the programs you choose to install. Something like that... Can't remember exactly.

IE cannot be removed...not without breaking Windows, anyway. It is an integral part of the OS. All you can do from Add/Remove Programs is remove access to IE from the Start menu and Desktop.

If you don't believe me, try a G**gle search for a method to remove it completely. I think you'll be disappointed.

I don't think anyone is making this into a war. I personally don't have a choice on my work computer. IE doesn't cater to Macintosh anymore, and Safari, well, let's just not go there...

My wife chooses to use it on our home PC while I use FF on it. She's one of those aformentioned "not liking change" people. I'm still working on her though.

Then again, it helps keep our bookmarks and settings separate using both browsers...

I quite agree, stiney. This is polite after-dinner conversation compared to the bitch-fights that go on at other forums I've visited.

The original request posted by kokopedal was: "Tell me again why I should use ff instead of ie.", which is pretty much what most of us have been doing - I'm certainly not aware of anyone "taking offence".

Actually Tony... I quite like Opera... i just prefer Firefox so it is my default...

I'm not fond of Netscape, though I prefer it to IE....

Safari and others I only run into when I use a Mac which, sorry to say, is also not my preference.

Mike.

so the original question was why should i use ff over ie?

well that's simple.

with every installation of ff, 1 starving child in a 3rd world country is saved.

so for all you ff haters out there, shame on you...

Wow....to think that you are that dedicated to FF almost made me go download it.

Seriously please don't take me as a person that knows nothing about computers. I built and maintain all 3 desktops and laptop in my house. I have built and maintained computers for companies and individuals. I am no way close to being a spring chicken when it comes to computers.

You raise some good points. but i will only address 2 as not to take up to much room. 1) windows has a feature called restore. if you get any kind of virus. just restore it. too easy. 2) FF also has exploits. It is no where near perfect. you know why IE suffers more attacks? or why most viruses are made for windows? you said it yourself. they hold 95% of the market in the OS department. and 78% in the browser department. to write code for anything else would be almost pointless.

thats it

have a great day

P.S. still laughing cause you take this so serious. lighten up. Life doesnt end when the monitor burns out. or when you have to spend 6.5 hours cleaning nested spyware and phantom processes out of your registry

actually spending the time to get rid of viruses/trojans and spyware does take time, the "quick fix" that Dell tech support suggests... doesn't always get rid of those...

I'm close friends who run a computer store, and I see that they're always fixing the "quick fix" restores... all that really does is layer and hide your files, but they're still exsistant on the HD...

well no one said ff is perfect, but it does far exceeds ie's

the simple truth of the matter is IE does not comply with web standards, ff does...among other browsers but we aren't talking about those...

and i don't think anyone is questioning your knowledge of hardware, but when it comes to programming for websites...take notjustgraphic's word for it, he does it for a living, and so do I.

i don't think you need to scoff at his comment, yeah he feels strongly and so do i.

So would you if you tried to code a website that doesn't need a disclaimer "optimized for ie" or "best viewed in ie"

well actually stock of anything isn't always the best solution, in most cases it's the cheapest... If you want quality you have to go get it, and in this case, it's go download FF.

thats it

have a great day

lol... thats like saying it's a good idea to shoot yourself in the foot because more than likely a doctor can fix it... my opinion... all things considered, i'd rather just not get shot in the first place.

Kinda the same reason for me... everyone is targeting the more common browser, so I consciously choose to use one that is less of a target... It's usually the guy standing out in front that gets shot first... me... i'm wearing a bullet proof vest, flak helmet, and steel toe boots, hiding behind the biggest thickest piece of steel I can... and if they'd invent it, i'd wear a cloaking device... I depend on my computer way too much to take any kind of risks...

As for your experience, I never questioned it... I simply offer my point of view in regards to Firefox, as was the topic of this thread... and sorry but yes, the security of my data, my client's data and my computer is something I take VERY seriously.

Mike.

I see your point Mike...but honestly i never had any serious problems with IE.
I do run a Spy&Ad remover every once in a week and i have my anti-virus updated.
Of course our data is very important but i dont think you need all that steel.
Spyware, adware, trojan, virus .... are a plague and no one is safe.

If i start using Firefox i will not need to run any sy&ad removers or anti-virus!

If this is true i will be the first one to change.

Thanks
Paulo
