Well, here it is a new year and our staff here at our local newspaper is as thin as it has every been. They just recently (end of last year) offered buy outs for those close to retirement... and sadly I just wasn't even close to the cutoff date. So... here I sit in our quiet building wondering how were are going to get through the busier parts of the year with such a thin crew... just as my manager is doing because they are not replacing many of those spots.
I work for a company that actaually owns many newspapers in our region and it appears they are slowly working towards consolidating all the publications into one central location where they will all be produced. Another newspaper not far has just out sourced all of their advertising functions to a company from India and tossing away 100 jobs.
Its a sad sad time... we are headed into a depression like nothing I have seen in my 17 years of employment and accountants seem to be steering the helms for many big businesses and micromanagement has taken a huge step into the world of unspoken vulgarities that makes it as acceptable as many of its four letter word cousins.
So... has anyone else seen this happening? Surely its widespread at this point and time
