Downsizing...

Well, here it is a new year and our staff here at our local newspaper is as thin as it has every been. They just recently (end of last year) offered buy outs for those close to retirement... and sadly I just wasn't even close to the cutoff date. So... here I sit in our quiet building wondering how were are going to get through the busier parts of the year with such a thin crew... just as my manager is doing because they are not replacing many of those spots.

I work for a company that actaually owns many newspapers in our region and it appears they are slowly working towards consolidating all the publications into one central location where they will all be produced. Another newspaper not far has just out sourced all of their advertising functions to a company from India and tossing away 100 jobs.

Its a sad sad time... we are headed into a depression like nothing I have seen in my 17 years of employment and accountants seem to be steering the helms for many big businesses and micromanagement has taken a huge step into the world of unspoken vulgarities that makes it as acceptable as many of its four letter word cousins.

So... has anyone else seen this happening? Surely its widespread at this point and time

This is cylclical. When your company was formed, I'm sure another was on the way out. Having been the last man standing twice in the past 6 years with the same company has me realizing how lucky I've had it.

Good luck with the future synthetic. Hopefully things turn around for your company or you find something brighter to focus on. There's not many things worth than being part of a situation where you're on deck of the Titanic and they're just rearranging deck chairs. An overused metaphor I think, but a good one just the same.

yeah... I am now focusing on educating myself in new medias like online and 3D and preparing my resume as well as getting my art portfolio ready... just never know when my ticket will be called up for termination the way things are going... and funny because we seem to hear that Titanic referrence a lot amongst office chit chat

Hi Synthetic,

Sorry to say I've been hearing a lot of downsizing going on around here (in Ohio). People I know are talking about many layoffs in their companies. I don't know if it's just the local economy or not.

Good luck... you've made it this far, so that must say something about your skills

Thanks foggy... yeah... I was kinda wondering if this downsizing was more of an issue just here in our local economy of nationwide. Seems to be a common topic in the news anymore.

One has to present themselves as a valuable asset these days and just hope for the best I guess.
