What's your favorite candy cane?!

Decided to make some candy canes for Christmas time but was wondering what your favorite candy cane is? Is it the original peppermint flavor or do you like the fruit flavors? I like the strawberry flavored ones myself.

I think they're more like what you and I would call seaside rock, so I'll vote for peppermint.

Oh sorry guys I shouldn't have assumed people know what they are! They are hard candy and the red and white striped ones taste like peppermint and the various colored ones usually taste like some sort of fruit.

It's amazing what different cultures have and don't have... Definitely not the fruit ones. Kind of a travesty that they exist.

Tamlin, wombie, Maybe we should ship some to the UK for you guys to try...

Sounds good to me! Maybe we can send you some Blackpool rock in return!

Actually, that reminds me: I've often heard of "salt water taffy", but I've never tried any. What is it exactly? I'm sure it's not as disgusting as it sounds.

Peppermint is traditional but I prefer the fruit if given a choice. But I wouldn't turn down a peppermint one.
A salt water taffy is not made of salty water as some might think. It's just a soft, flavored, chewy candy, individually wrapped. Not a big favorite either. You never leave Atlantic City, New jersey without your box of salt water taffy. Now thats tradition.

Tamlin.....but what is black pool or sea side rock?

Very much a British seaside tradition - as far as I can tell, it's pretty much the same kind of hard candy as candy canes. The main differences are that sticks of rock are straight, and they usually have the name of the seaside resort running all the way through them lengthways, made of a contrasting coloured candy. Rock is sometimes referred to by the name of the seaside town where you buy it, hence Blackpool rock (Blackpool is a popular seaside resort on the West coast of England) or Brighton rock (as in the title of the Graham Greene novel). Have a look at this: Rock and Seaside Rock - Fruit and Aniseed - Sweets and Rocks UK

So what has salt water taffy got to do with salt water?

Haha! I'm sure they make those somewhere! If not, patent that and get to it!

All this talk about international candy does make me interested in other things that are similar and different in various countries. Anyone heard of Swedish Fish?! They are small chewy candies in the shape of fish and taste like strawberry. I used to buy them by the bags as a kid. They were a penny each so I'd buy a few bags! I wasn't sure if they were made in Sweden but after some research I found this.

What other candies do you like?
