Have you tried entering SETUP and restoring the CMOS data to the factory defaults? CMOS data can be corrupted by power glitches and possibly Windows crashes. If you cannot get the "CMOS checksum error" message to go away (and you are sure the battery is OK, or you have already replaced it), it is possible that the data in your BIOS chip on the motherboard has gone bad. In many cases, BIOS corruption can be fixed with a flashBIOS update which can be downloaded from the motherboard manufacturer's website. Another cause may be a virus, or the worst case scenario: that your motherboard is on the way out. How old is the computer?

get a program called cpuid to id your bios maker and version and then update it, use the wrong bios and you kill your mobo, but with you saying your mobo is 4 to 5 years old, might be better to get a new one

Unfortunately, Eric is right: where I work, we have a rolling replacement programme for computers that judges any PC over 3 years old to be obsolete, and this seems to reflect the general attitude of the IT industry.

thats just the way it is, but you might want to check for a possible upgrade instead of a massive new machine... that might delay the costs another generation of software, about 1-2 years

That's what's known as "percussive maintenance"

Good to know you're up and running OK again.
