Good choice. I've been using AVG for months now, and it really does the job.

I've been using Grisoft AVG for a couple of years now and I have had no viruses at all. It's probably the best free anti virus you can lay your hands on. It updates constantly too...very efficient.

I've used AVG for ages now. It's never crashed on me or anything. And it's never let anything slip past. Not like certain other expensive anti-virus software that's crashed on many peoples computers that I know of... and let many serious viruses through... *cough* Norton *cough*

Hey, I loved AVG so much that I actually paid for a proper license! I wish they'd get a move on with a version for Vista though... :/

AVG and avast are the 2 most popular free

AVG and avast are the 2 most popular
ones in here plus you need adware/spyware protection not to mention a firewall. Here are some of the recommended adware/spware programs that are free.

Spybot S&D (download, check for updates, read the tutorial and scan often, it also does some blocking)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

SpywareBlaster (a blocker only, download it, check for updates, enable it and leave it alone except for checking for updates occasionally)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard (similiar to SpywareBlaster but works in a different way and does not update as often for that reason).
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

Ad-Aware SE (a scanner, download, check for updates, read the directions and scan.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

cwshredder (stand alone unit)(another small scanner for certain things, ALL other windows should be closed)

I use Zone Alarm as my firewall. Just do a google search for it.
And what's with these Mac versions of norton? I thought "Macs don't get viruses". Which reminds me of someone I know who has a Mac and always goes on about how they never get viruses or spyware... but he has all this stuff like Norton Security Suite and various pricey software to stop viruses.

I was reading an article about this the other day. Apparently, the main reason "Macs don't get viruses" is nothing to do with them being more secure or anything - it's mainly because virus writers know the majority of people use PCs so they don't bother writing viruses for Macs. This could always change, of course, as I believe Mac viruses have been developed but have not been released "into the wild" as they say. If this did happen, I wonder how many Mac users would suffer because they didn't bother with up-to-date antivirus software (or any antivirus at all), simply because they thought "Macs don't get viruses"?

I heard there's a group of about 20 people developing viruses especially for Macs because they're pissed off with Mac users bragging about not having viruses.
