man ohhh man kinda long? maybe

i dont know if anyone works from home. i think one person is. but anyways, so im on vacation back home. my client who is also my aunty, said that as of june 2006 i am no long her web master. this was in early may. so i said ok. whatever. well they have a show tomorrow, and i emailed her about 2 weeks ago asking if she needed any updates done because i know theres no updates done and if i am still her web master.. so no answer. so yesterday morning i finally get on the computer to check my email and voila, she sends me an email saying that i need to do these things and it needs to be done today. im real blown away at this. and im actually real angry. i mean 3 days before your show? so this comp im on now is a mac and i work with pc. touched a old school mac back when i was like 12, but thats it. so its more than a little foriegn to me. ive never used ftp through dreamweaver and i got so fustrated. i worked hard. my kid wasnt asleep. i made him eat and watch a movie with breaks you know. but i had no baby sitter. i was in a bad mood but i told myself you can do it. so i got 2 pages of updates up which took about almost the whole day. would have taken me 20 minutes if i was at home or on a pc. i could have went into the office but i didnt wanna bother with driving that far, its like a 45 minute to an hour drive. and baby sitter. so i was determined. before i went to sleep i was having a problem with uploading, it wouldnt upload so i said forget it ill go into the office tomorrow morning. drop my son off to family and go to the office. so today i finally found an ftp for mac. i thought could use wsftp i tried a few more and it wouldnt work. and then i remembered cute ftp. not sure if it was only for windows like how ws ftp is. so i DLd it and voila you guys have no idea how much that made me feel better. also come to find out their server was down in the morning and the guy was fixing it. so i took a break. hour or so later it started working again. and im all done. last night i was so pissed and dumbfounded why it wouldnt work because i know i was doing it right. i sat there for atleast 45 minutes just staring at the screen reading the help thing over and over.. and just sitting there wondering why the hell it wasnt working. but now its done and im happy. made about 200$. mall here i come. i know there are deadlines in life but 3 days before? maybe in work it will happen no matter what but when your client knows you aint at home. but i guess thats just work right? ahh.. sorry i know thats real long but i needed to vent. thanks.. whoever gets to the very bottom of this. i appreciate it..

Wow! I hope you feel better now you've got that off your chest!

I suppose the moral of this story is: be very careful about working for members of your family. You're right that 3 days notice is a very tight deadline, but well done for meeting it. Sounds like you certainly earned your $200!

What a hassle! God bless you for your determination. What you went thru is why I now refuse to work for family and friends, they take advantage and think nothing about it! Enjoy your well earned trip to the mall.

Lol. Yeah working for family members can be pretty frustrating sometimes. Like when my mum asks me to make a bussiness card for her or something... just when I think it's done she's like "oh no I don't like the way that works". So I modify it(or delete it completely). And eventually she says "I don't think I like the way this card looks" or something. So then I have to start all over again! Even though she was watching the whole time she just doesn't realise whether she likes the current style or not untill at least 2 hours through. And then at the end I get like $30 or something.

I know how frustrating it can get with request coming in late just before deadlines. I just had to do work for a client that wanted about 7 spreadsheets of user records (about a little over 300 users) that were completely jumbled up organized and input into her database before the end of the day. Problem is a lot of peope do not realize how much work goes into things like that. Especially gets annoying when the client has a CMS already installed and still tells you to do updates.

Anyway, good to hear that everything ended up ok. Web design is actually pretty thankless. Clients always seem to think they know how to create the perfect website.

I work from home and know that having little ones around while you're dealing with deadlines is a major juggling act. Heartless as it may seem, it's best that aunty takes her business elsewhere. And good riddance too! Really inconsiderate to insist on updates on short notice and it adds a load of rudeness to wait until your on vacation. I've the same problem with my sister, who is working under the 'grandfather clause' that because I created and maintained her website for free the first year, that all updates are free forever. And because she's my sister, paying her hosting on time just isn't a priority ... I'll understand, right?
Like Bedlam123 stated, don't do work for relatives and friends. Unfortunately, we all learn this the hard way.
Glad you got through the ordeal and made your $200. ... Now you need a vacation!
